I have a KDS 19" Avitron monitor..

The thing is hot as hell on top after a few hours of use.

So much, it makes my room way too hot.

Just wondering if there's any good monitors that run cool... or at least cooler.

I've heard LCD's are much cooler, but I'd still like to know about CRT's

Monitors will vary in the amount of power they consume and the heat they give off. Typically a better design (more efficient) monitor will run cooler. LCD?s consume about half the power of a CRT monitor thus run cooler.

Also depends what colors your using, and being displayed at the moment or very recently. LCDs are much cooler :)

My Philips 109B2 (19 inch flat CRT) gets mildly warm on top after running for a while, but it is still comfortable to put one's hand there after an extended period. Yes, LCDs are much cooler and more efficient, but there are other small problems with the technology in general; these problems are slowly but surely disappearing (ghosting is no longer much of an issue, but I don't know how well they've improved color reproduction at this point).

Have you ever touched the back of your large-screen TV? :) Look at the wattage specs on the back of the monitor or the TV. It is directly related to the amount of heat produced.

I have two 19in monitors running at the exact same resolution, refresh rate, etc. My 4 year old trinitron runs nice and cool. My brand new samsung 19in 900NF runs hot as hell. Most of it has to do with the size of the holes on the back. The sony has nice big holes, the samsung doesnt.
