Do slot fans work?

Thinking about getting one to add as an extra exhaust for my shuttle xpc. Things are getting a bit toasty in there and I want to cool it down.

if ur just trying to cool ur videocard by sucking some of the hotair off it then maybe, from what i've read, in general they don't work so well.

Don't bother. They barely move any air and are practically useless. If you can, put a side intake on your case. That way you'll have cool air blowing onto your card(s).

Huh...."They don't move air". Put your finger over the outlet. Where do you think this air is coming from? They do work. Mine can be rotated to draw from above or below the slot...works good.

They do work, but only really have an effect when there is very little airflow already present. You might want to look at overclockers.com, they have an article by somebody who did some mods to increase the cooling of his shuttle.

Nevertheless a side intake is the better option.

Many slot coolers blow just as much air as a medium speed fan. "They barely move any air" is 100% BS. However, the two slot fans I purchased at newegg around a year ago were piles of junk as far as construction goes. The molex connectors on both of them have since been destroyed through repeated plugging/unplugging. If you do decide to get one, be very gentle when plugging them in and unplugging them, the wires have a tendency to pull out of the molex.

Thanks for the tips. Since the shuttle pretty much has no intake cept for the side vents and only one exhaust, I thought adding another exhaust might help get the hot air out faster. And I know adding a side fan would be best, but I don't wanna cut the side.

Anyone got some feedback as to the noise level on these things? If they are quiet it would be cool to put one beneath my zalman----
