Do Sidewinder joysticks work in DX9?

Because my joystick is screwed up in my game when I installed DX9, it is a Precision 2 SideWinder Joystick. Here's the problem. I am using a plane sim, and when I pull the joystick down, it moves the plane up slowly, not like it used to be, it used to work so good.

Have any of you ever had problems?
