Do SATA -> PATA adapters degrade performance/stability?

I'm getting the IC7-MAX3 mobo which has Dual SATA Raid (I only assume that means I can't Raid PATA). I really want a 74GB Raptor but for less money I could get 3 more WD 80GB Special Editions (have one already) and RAID them in 0+1 for 160GB or storage and a faster speed than a Raptor! My only problem is that the 80GB WD HDDs aren't SATA.

Raid 0 w/ 2 800JBs isn't going to outperform a Raptor in most things. Raptor access time is much much lower.

And actually you can plug one drive into PATA, one into SATA and raid them if you want, I did it for a while. Then I switched the PATA drive to SATA as well with no problems or having to rebuild the array.

Oh. I guess my noob common sense just told me that two 7200rpm drives in raid would outperform one 10000rpm drive. Ah well. Anyway, I guess I'll try using adapters. Never hurts to try (oh, yeah except for all that money I'm going to spend to see if it works...)

I have been using 2 highpoint rockethead 100 adapters with my 2 ide DM+9s in a SATA raid array and thy have worked flawlessly for a year now.

make sure you secure them tightly, maybe with rubber bands or something. The adapters come loose very easily. Mine came loose a little, and all my data got corrupt.
