<< I don't want to name any names and have the thread locked for beating on a dead horse.

From time to time various members are shown to have been posting under multiple names or totally lying about themselves in major ways such as pretending they do something for a living that they don't.

Where is the line drawn between harmless fun and, give-me-drugs-I-need-help?

Personally I'd say that if you are posting under a fake name and most of your posts are entirely outrageous and nobody really takes them seriously then it could be some harmless role-playing, but what about the people who post a few hundred posts or - gasp - thousands of posts and over a long period of time people take them seriously as somebody that they really aren't? I think these people need help. I think that if you're sitting at the computer for a few hours a day rapping out messages playing an entirely different role than your life really is perhaps your life sucks and you should do something positive about it instead of living out a fantasy to strangers.

it depends.

if its a joke and they are doing it to pull a fast one or be funny then revealing the truth and laughing in everyone's face then its all in good fun i think. or if its a group of people who do it to cause a ruckus and get everyone all frazzled for hilarious results then whatever, its all in good fun and just being a jackass.

but when these role playing characters start developing relationships with other members then there is a problem. for example, im sorta close iwth a few people here and the idea that someone would pretend to be someone else then for me to confide in them and what not is kinda creepy and crazy i think.
and as much as i try to seperate my internet friends from my reallife friends sometimes there is overlap and those boundries get crossed. (i can think of two shining examples of people that i know online and i consider to be my real friends right now)

thats my opinon anyways.

*kat. <-- doesnt know what its like to have someone she knows online turn out to be someone who isnt real so is a bit biased.

Yeah it would be like going 100 MPH to 0 in a split second. I think it would take too much of a toll physically.

Well if you were very paranoid about it you could always video conference over msn messenger or something. Should be near impossible to fake.

It's only a "problem" for the very confused who are incapable of grasping the fact that an internet BBS is not the real world.

Well the thing is generally human interaction - regardless of medium - forms relationships. Although at least a couple people here manage to avoid it, for better or worse, most people here do not. The Internet is as much real world as real-life interactions, just missing the face-value. I can lie and pretend I am an airline pilot here and I can do the same thing in real life as well. I can also, in real life, pretend that I am a multi-millionaire.

Well if you get a package that has a return address from Martha Stewart it will be that package I sent you. What ever you do, don't make soup out of it!!

Yeah, right. It is not even close. In the real world, we do a few things beside type on a keyboard responding to names on a forum that may or may not be who they claim to be and whom, the vast majority of which, we will never meet.

ATOT is entertainment, and nothing more. If one uses it for anything that is actually important, then they should seek help right along side the role player.
