no doh if you're a factory worker actually building the product.
but why cant an office worker wfh, at least some of the time?

Musk's strategy is to locate the engineers designing the product, nearby the technicians that build the product. If the engineers are WFH, that can make it more difficult to have this collaboration.

This 3 minute video does a good job of explaining SpaceX's Collaborative work environment.

Tesla has marketing, sales, human resources, operations, accounting, etc... lot's of departments besides technicians and engineers. Did you not think about that?

Tesla has a marketing department?
The majority of people at Tesla are technicians and engineers.
However these type of erratic comments from Musk have become all to common in 2022. In my opinion, after 14-years as CEO it is time for Musk to step aside as CEO and let somebody else who is more stable take the reigns at Tesla. I have heard some comments on the Web that it would be impossible for all the Tesla employees to come into the office who have been hired since 2020. There just isn't space for them in the Tesla's office. Maybe Musk needs to talk to his facilities and HR people before sending out company wide rants.

Some of both, but likely more the former.

There are still a ton of departments that it takes to run a huge company that are not engineers or technicians that do not need to be onsite 5 days a week but can be hybrid. Suck as internal IT, HR, accounting, operations, and not sure if they have a financing department like some other auto makers do.

This is only going to cost Tesla talent and I have no problem with that.

1. Not all rich people are jerks
2. Not everyone is a jerk all the time
3. He obviously has a problem with the HR manager for his California factory working from another state LOL

The biggest problem of being ultra-rich is that you distance yourself from being around regular people all the time, so you lose perspective due to "ivory tower" syndrome, especially when everyone around you is a "yes man". If you like reading 419 Eater, you'll enjoy the Tiger Oil memos:

Very subtle guy, Mr. Davis:

DO YOUR JOBS AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!

If you don’t know how to type, you’d better learn.

Ah, the sweet white collar world!

That is slavery with a carnation in the lapel (a day off). I know some people who have for years boycotted anything made in China. It's something to consider.

These days this would be difficult in America.

Samsung is made in Korea. Not sure about all Motorolas
My cell phone is a Samsung Galaxy S9. The two computers I use by far the most are Lenovo P1 laptops, I suppose Made in China. Edit: online it says Lenovo also manufactures in Japan, I believe India and North Carolina, USA. I am not finding info on where my P1's were manufactured. I also have 3 unactivated LG android phones, I suppose those were made in Korea. They are cheap but handy and I actually prefer them for listening to MP3s via headphones. The music playing app is better.

I'm aware of that.

They live near me in the Bay Area and are adamant, have been for years. Made in China? They aren't buying it.

If they have anything with a Lithium Ion battery in it. The odds are at some point the raw materials for that product went through somewhere in China.
The finished product might not say made in China but so much of the raw material supply chain passes through China, it will have some type of Chinese connection.

I hate the fact that it's impossible to avoid China, we really need to have more manufacturing in North America. Would be better for the environment too, less cargo ships. Those are actually super horrible for the environment.

SpaceX and Tesla are physically building goods. You cannot build something in a factory and be WFH.
Guy around the corner is a manager at a machine shop that Musk uses for parts, at least before Musk moved some of his operations to Austin, TX. He definitely didn't/doesn't WFH.
