Do religious people bother you?

I Don't mean the people that come to your door and try to convert you, I mean the people that are like religious everything, everything happens because god intended it that way and whatnot. Not nuns or anything but people in your everyday life. Personally I find it annoying if someone says "well the reason why..... happened is because god wanted it that way" and then they go into some religious explanation as to why they're right on this theory they've created. I'm not saying that I don't believe in god, I do, I go to church every week. Maybe it's because I go to a public high school where church and state are separated where it sounds out of place for anyone to mention God because no one ever really talks about it there. Do these people annoy you too? Or is it just me?

(Wonder how many posts this thread will get... Religion and political threads usually get allot)

My mom says that for everything its annoying as hell. She says all this stuff because I don't go to chruch like God will save you and bring you back to his kingdom.

I don't mind at all if somebody is religious. As long as they aren't trying to shove it down my throat. If somebody starts off on a tangent like you described, I will just leave.

To each his own. Just don't try and convert me.

I dontn like it either, but I dont go around telling them usually. Most of the time religious people i know only piss me off when they preach that crap toward or around me.

In general religious people don't bother me. Although, when they knock on my door and ask "have you been saved by allowing Jesus Christ into your heart" I do tend to get a little upset..

I'm not saying every sentence they come out with is religious in one way or another, but it seems like a red light goes on if someone said the words "Because of god" in a sentence and it immediately makes the entire sentence annoying.
For example, just a few days ago we have one of these religious kids in our class (I don't really like the kid but it has nothing to do with his religious outbursts) but him and I got talking with a group of friends and one of the kids that we was in the group said something about he was going to have sex with someone didn't hear much beyond that because the religious kid immidiately went into this preach mode... "Don't you want to wait till you are married to that special person, it's the word of god...." yada yada yada.... and what was an interesting conversation became an annoying one quickly. (Due to the example: I'm not for pre-marital sex) but because someone's choices are different than your own, doesn't give you the right to try and force your religion upon them.

I used to be very helpful to strangers until I realized that 3 out 4 times when someone goes, "Excuse me, I really need your help...." it's followed by, "to try and save your soul from evil and find Jesus as your savior."

FSUCK OFF!!!

Not nearly as much as the totaly "non-rligious" ones that try and push their way of thinking, or the ones that tell you you're wrong for believing in what you choose to believe in!😉

I am religious... but I don't believe 90% of the things I'm told when in church... because the bible wasn't just placed on the earth by the hand of god... it was written by man... therefor it could be false... for example... I'm in favor of the theory of evolution, we see it today with less complex organisms, some deep water fish that live in the dark depths of the ocean have evolved... they don't have eyes because it's so dark that they couldn't see anyways... Why would it be different with a human... why couldn't an ape evolve into a human over a period of time? I don't believe that people where just placed on earth. But I'm not going to say that someone is wrong if they do believe that people where placed on earth by the hand of god, I just think that the theory of evolution is more believable.

those door to door jehova witnesses are the worst... quick way to get me to close my door... show up at it trying to sell me something.

The problem I find with these people is that they have lost their ability to think on their own. Their religion tells them what to do. Who to marry, what to wear, what to eat, etc. Little mindless robots. Sounds like a simple life for people who can't think. Let the religion be responsible for all your actions. Can't possibly do anything wrong as long as I follow the religion and give all my money to the head religious figure.

Like you said - if they could just stay to themselves and not interfere with my life, that would then be OK.

religion has little to do with it, it's the people who are sure they are righteous or right, be they athiest or christian, that typically make my heart ache.

oh yah... they do irritate me. maybe it's a way of avoiding realities and also to find reasons for things they cannot understand or accept. oh well... it's always nice to have someone be responsible for everything.

Wuming, I think you condensed everything I said into a few sentences because that's exactly how a I feel... that they don't take responsibilities for themselves basically, it's just an easy way to explain misunderstandings.

I'm married to a family that has several members who mistake their faith for a way of achieving power and status over others. Their "Christianity" is completely lost in their sad attempt at making themselves feel better at the expense of others. They don't realize that they have missed the point of Christianity completely. 🙁

I have also known atheists who have tried to assume that they were more intelligent than me because of their beliefs. Any "intellectual superiority" they might have is completely lost in their failure to realize that in the end, their atheism is yet another form of faith and religion... humanism, I believe.

Don't get me wrong... I've known atheists who realized that the conclusion they came to did not make them 'superior' and I have known Christians and people of other faiths who do not think that they are better than others because of their beliefs.

Sooooo...

Do religous people bother me?

No.

Do people who are jerks bother me, religious, non-religious, and atheist alike?

A resounding Yes!

well they don't act it, if you want to spread our word that's fine, but don't be throwing religion at me in a place where church and state are supposedly separated.

Generally I have no real care about a person's faith or lack of same. However, when someone starts preaching to me about how I'm going to hell because I'm an agnostic / republican / whatever, it really aggravates me. Bad salesmanship to start out by calling the prospective buyer an idiot (as is implied by the "believe as I do or go to hell" argument). That said, 99.9999999999% of the Xians I know don't bother me about it so I really couldn't care less about that aspect of their lives. When someone starts trying to sell their religion to me, though, I find it very hard to keep from saying, "I judge people based upon their actions and their character. A person's beliefe system is highly irrelevant to me. I do not appreciate it when others who know nothing about me tell me I'm evil because my beliefs do not exactly coincide with their beliefs." But as I said, unless I'm with a group of friends and have a desire to play devil's advocate (no pun intended) I let them alone provided they show me the same courtesy.

EDIT: <<atheism is yet another form of faith and religion...>>
Atheism is by definition an absense of faith in any sort of god. Of course a lot of people who claim to be Atheist are kidding themselves, but that's neither here nor there. You said you thought that Atheism was possibly Humanism; technically correct but not quite right. Humanists are Atheists by definition, but all Atheists are not Humanists. (Kind of like, "All chickens are birds, but all birds are not chickens".) I cannot see Atheism as a religion for the simple reason that nothing is worshipped, even in Humanism man is recognised as fallible (sp?) and I've yet to see a Humanist worship a man.

Isla... are you one of these people that trys to explain things through the word of god? I mean, I'm cool with that, that's your way of doing things... but are u? just outta curiousity? I'm not trying to convert anyones beliefs with this thread, just trying to create conversation.

Due to the lack of 'true' religious people in The Netherlands I've hardly any experience with annoying religious people.
On all American forums I visit reguarly (AT and Sitepointforums.com) I've met some guys who seem to believe most of their religion. They're mostly annoying, but heh, even Atheists can be annoying 🙂

I don't have a problem with religious people in general, but i think it is morally contradictory and irritating when they try to make you see things their way. Billions of people in this world, thousands of religions and faiths that precede and outdate their own faith, and everyone else is wrong without question or thought. I find that to be very narcissistic. I think religions are a reflection of culture, race, environment, and time; and they are all different perceptions of the same exact thing. If you cannot respect another person, then you shouldn't assume you know what's best for them.

I live in the bible belt... I guess if religious folks bugged me I would have lost my mind by now... It doesn't bother me... As long as it is not someone who argumentatively trying to get me to become religious...

😉
