Thinking about hooking up my car subs to my receiver, just for sh!ts and giggles. Do receivers output DC?

no
Your amp puts out AC which alternates at what ever frequency you are playing.

Not unless there's something seriously wrong with them.

Note, however, that car speakers generally have a nominal impedance of 4 ohms rather than 8.

there shouldn't be a problem, i was under the impression they all output the same way.....someone prove me wrong on that, i've hooked my sub up to my receiver in free air when i bought it just to make sure it wasn't jacked.....and it went fine....as noted most subs are 4 ohms and the receiver "expects" 8 ohm, it shoulnd't be a problem if it's a fairly decent one. Keep in mind also it won't be quite as loud due to the natural 6db boost you get for being in a car(not sure why it just happens) have fun and no worries!

Not if they're working correctly. The lower impedance should not have much effect on a decent amp, but it means your amp will be putting out twice as much power as it would into 8 ohms. Most manufacturers publish performance specs at both impedances.

P (power) = E (voltage) ^2 / R (impedance).
