Do private Universities give out more tuition grants than public ones?

The private university I attend awards, on average, $27000 to those who qualify for financial aid. I have no idea if that is lower or higher than what state schools give out.

Depends on the private school and the size of their endowment but from my experience and what i've heard, yes, they'll give out more free money but you also probably have to take on more loans since the total tuition is much more . At Duke I got about 20k in free money, 8k in loans the rest was out of pocket. About 43k in all I think. If I went to UW, I would'nt have qualified for financial aid, which mean I pay something like 12k total per year (can't be sure of that number, maybe the UW kids here can tell you).

i think room and board was about $21k for me per year and the great state of California paid about a third.

If you're a dependent, they take both into account for determining what financial aid you'll get.

I think so, my brother's school for example gives out what I call consolation prizes for scholarships, so you didn't get it but we'll still give you $500 off just for trying.

Depends how old you are/tax status. If you're a dependant, your parents. If you're no longer a dependant, your money.

No, there are a number of universities who use incentive packages to lure quality applicants to their school. These individuals are offered huge tuition breaks to attend the university. My alma mater is well-known for doing this.

Being classified as independent by most colleges require you to either have a kid or be married if you are under 26.

If not they are looking at your parent's whether they contribute or not 9 times out of 10.

Also not all grants are income based.

True although if you're at the top tier private univeristies, getting merit based scholarships/grants are pretty difficult. 9/10 kids who are on financial aid are given just regular grants because of their family's income level.

Yes, my Ivy League private education was cheaper than instate tuition at UC Berkeley would have been.
Of course I was dirt poor living in my grandma's garage, so YMMV.
