Evadman's world; What I would do if I were in charge:

3 Types of prisons; Minimum security, Regular security, and maximum security.

Minimun security:
#1 Basic humanitarian things needed for living (bed, toilet, clothing, food) provided by the prison. 2 prisoners to a large cell. Prisioners allowed some personal items such as books, music players, etc. All must be purchased with credits (see below)
#2 4 hour "outside time" per day to get excersize.
#3 Prisoners would work four 10 hr shifts per week off or on prison site doing things while supervised. (cleaning roadsides, licence plates, etc)
#4 Work would earn "cretits" that could be used for "recreation". Such as extra outside time, TV, internet access, take out food, etc. More fun = more credits. Example: 8 hrs working would earn 30 minutes internet access(approved sites only), 1.5 packs of cigs, 2 hrs TV. (80 hrs = take out pizza or something not prison food )
#5 You screw up, you lose privleges and credits. you must earn the privlege to work.
#6 Prisonsers unused credits would be turned into a cash equivelent when prisoner is released, and can only be used for essential things (food, clothing, transportation) things to help them get "reaclimated" with society. this cash equivelent would be handled by a "debit" style card that would opnly be accepted by certain things and places.

Regular Security
#1 Basic humanitarian things needed for living (bed, toilet, clothing, food) provided by the prison. 2 prisoners per small cell. no personal items.
#2 2 hour "outside time" per day to get excersize.
#3 Prisoners would work on site doing things to earn credits. 8 hr supervised shifts.
#4 Again, credits earned, but bure credits are required for prilivges. (TV, outside time, internet access) Limits imposed on time allowed. Example: 8 hrs work earns you a pack of cig's or 20 minutes of internet, or 1 hr of TV.
#5 Screwup and all privleges are removed, and no working is allowed till prisoner earns the "privlige" to work.

High Security
#1 Basic humanitarian things needed for living (bed, toilet, clothing, food) provided by the prison. 1 prisoner per tiny cell.
#2 1 hr outside time.
#3 Prisoners work onsite, do not ever leave prison for any reason.
#4 Credits earned but privleges are different. Privliges include: Larger cell, a cell mate, TV, internet restriced to checked e-mail.
#5 Good behavior for a long time may move prisoner to a lower security prison on warden's decision.
#6 Screw up and no more privleges. you live in a hole with 30 minutes of excerse time. you screwed up, you knew it, live with it.

Prisoners do not have most rights. no lawsuits over peanut butter or other crap. you gave up your rights when you broke the law. you can earn some privliges, but you have to work for them. no work, no privleges.

There. Evadman solved all the problems. Not bad for thinking on the fly.

15hrs per day locked in their cell
1hr per day either in their cell or in the gym (nothing else. these are your only two options)
8hrs per day working in the prison to help pay off their debt to society with a low-income job. Maybe, say minimum wage that will go towards upkeep of the prison -they do not get to see any of the money they earn.

Other than that, prisoners should be allowed to study anything they like, provided that they pay for their college (high school if necessary) tuition out of the money they earn working. Studying can be done in their cells.

In their cell, they should be allowed:

1 well kept, self maintained mattress
1 well kept, self maintained pillow
1 well kept, self maintained blanket
1 well kept, self maintained titanium sink with clean running water - not heated or chilled
1 well kept, self maintained titanium toilet. Toiletries to be purchased by inmate's prison job.
2 well kept, self maintained prison uniforms to be replaced only by the inmate's paying for it through his prison job.

Meals to be served individually to members in their cells. No more cafeteria outbreaks.

And that's IT.

and exactly when would they shower and eat? They should be able to keep all money they earn after release. Titanium is expensive. Stainless steel is the way to go.

do you live by a min security jail? because white collar resort prison is different than federal pound you in the ass prison.

Gotsmack, hygene is up to them. Maybe a cloth will be included and they can sponge-bath themselves out of the sink. And if they rebel against hygene, the firehose through the cell should get them decent. :)

No, they should not get the money. Maybe an alotment to help them adjust, or a debit card of some kind that could be used for esential items. They should not earn minimum wage. last time I heard (iirc) prisoners were making something in the $2 range. I may be worng, becuase I do not remember where I heard that :(

PRISONERS DO NOT HAVE RIGHTS! They lost them when they broke the law. Now they have to work to get any privleges;they are not going to be given. Work your ass off, get to watch TV. Obviously differeing security prisons would have more or less security along with different "privliges" that can be earned. nik was speaking of maximun security because so were most others in this thread.

They have way too many. They shouldn't be given cable tv first of all (they must really feel punished cause they get basic cable but none of the premium channels). Whatever though, not like anything is going to change and they are going to have harsher punishments. Prisoners that have raped or killed someone should be forced organ donors...

Like I said, in Az the they make $0.25 an hour, though I had heard that went up to I think $0.35 and hour...
