Do printer cartridge refills work good or not?

It depends on the printer, ink, amount of refills, etc. For example; HP printers put the ink jet heads on the cartridges. That way the "cheap" heads can be replaced with each cart change. By refilling them, you're using the old worn out heads. With an Epson, the heads are built into the printer. You risk dammaging the printer with impurities in the ink.

I totally destroyed an Epson stylus printer by attempting to refill a cartridge. (print head in printer)

I destroyed a lexmark cartridge by attempting to refill it. (print head in cartridge)

My success with refilling has been 0 out of 2 attempts, there's no way I'm trying it again.

I have been refilling my Epson 600 printer for over 2 years with no problems other than saving alot of money.

Refill my BJC-6000 once in a while. I just love the clear ink tanks, so can see if it is full or not. Easy to refill too, print head is in a cartridge. Had a difficult time with my HP 694 and Xerox C11 printers. Made a lot of mess with their cartridges. Upgraded to a Lexmark Z53 lately, hopefully the refill will not be that hard. The best way is to buy generic cartriges if available for your model. They usually cost half of the originals.

I forgot to mention that "if" you can get refilling to work, it could actually "pay" for your needed upgrade if you do dammage the printer. Personally I found that the ink cartridges for my HP 812c died often before they ran out of ink. I'd refill them just to find they still had ink, and just quit.
