Do people still play COD4?

I played COD:MW2 last night and it was a lot of fun, although there was a noticeable lag (this was on 360). However, I refuse to buy the game on account of the lack of dedicated servers for PC.

According to steam, there aren't many COD4 players, but that's only what steam sees, not other services if I'm not mistaken. So, should I buy it?

There is a lot depending on the server. I still play it. Some new map servers should help liven up the action.

I've been playing it lately. There is still a lot on hardcore team deathmatch at least.

Old thread but I'm trying to help a friend trying to play CoD4 on Win 7. The game opens, goes to a black screen and that's it.

I'm not a gamer and his computer is miles and miles away.

I'm coming up with some information but it all seems to be related to the beta version of Win 7.

Nope. It was a great experience but unlike many other great gaming experiences it wasnt worth repeating. On the 2nd run through I didnt enjoy myself as much. The shooting action was too heavily scripted to keep me addicted, unlike Serious Sam or FEAR.

There are enough players who are displeased with MW2 so they switched back to CoD4. Not a bad idea either.

what i dont get is why COD4 is still used for benchmarking on various hardware sites.
i mean, what does it matter if VidCard1 gets 300FPS and VidCard2 gets 320?
this game is old stop benching with it!

its like benching with Oblivion today. useless.

Just look for the Crysis benchmark ... Even MW2 is not that hardware-ambitious game.
But because it's still one of the most played games, they test with it.

Hell, I've seen some sites still benchmarking with Quake.

Make sure he has a Mic plugged in and enabled.

Multiplayer CoD4 will immediately crash without error if there's no mic on the system.

there are still some 9k+ servers up last i checked. it also still beats out mw2 on xfire for hours logged. not many people purchased it on steam because it wasnt released on steam at first, it came out after the game was released.

hell cod2 beats mw2

I ran across that several times in my research. But he had just installed the software and was trying to launch it in singleplayer mode.

I'm going to have the computer over here this weekend. He'll be out of town for over a week and I'll have plenty of time to mess with it.

Thanks for the reply. I'm open for any additional advice.

I second the microphone solution - I believe it effects the 64-bit version of Vista as well IIRC.

Yeah, lots of people are still playing. I get on there every once in a while to play some Backlot and Winter Crash. Winter Crash was awesome!

I found it far too spammy-- it was clear it was built for a console. Many of the levels depend on luck-- you seeing him first. Which can change at any minute if the server decides you've been alive long enough-->spawns someone 90 degrees to right of you, who is looking straight at you, all he has to do is start shooting.

Levels were far too open as well. Nowhere that you can actually gain a tactical advantage and be safe-- anybody can come from any of about 5 angles that you can't all be watching at once.

So no, I haven't gone back to Cod4, and these reasons are why I never thought once about buying MW2.

For team based action I really enjoy Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Battle gets pretty heated sometimes when people start working together. Lot of fun. Only cost me $6 too :)

the maps are laid out better, they feel bigger
and it doesn't feel as arcadish for some reason.

It affected me in Vista, but only in multiplayer. Single player worked fine without a microphone hooked up.

It always worked in XP no matter what set up.

Even CoD2 had that problem in multiplayer with Vista.
