Heh - I take pride in driving nice older cars. My '98 Accord is in excellent condition (got some paint chips to touch up this weekend but otherwise outstanding), gets me 30+ MPG on my commute, has 205K miles, and runs like a top. When I see people who make 1/3 as much as I do driving a car that cost 15-20 times as much as mine, it actually brings a smile to my face. My previous car was an '00 Maxima that also had over 200K miles, but it was a nice car.

Of course they do. Especially in that scenario, where the salesman's probably seen his fair share of tire kickers who simply can't afford a car. They waste his time, while another salesman picks up the people who can end up signing a deal.

Just like the story would have been very different if your wife showed up alone.

Heaven forbid a car salesman be burdened with showing some people some cars.

I'm more interested the Chrysler Minivan in the background, is it a turbo model? :)

LOL- my wife actually drives one. It does have nearly 300hp and dual DVD players :)

I sort of like having a beat up car. Shows character and that I don't blow money on frivolous things. Personally, I'll never buy a brand new car, and will almost exclusively always buy used ones.

I drive an '02 Z24 Cavalier right now. Hoping it at least lasts me another couple of years! 103k right now!

Yes.

If the car/truck gets terrible gas mileage, I figure the driver is pretty stupid.

Why? Because they bought something they wanted? What's stupid is people like you that judge others based on what they buy or like. It's not your money so butt the fuck out.

I live in a town where pretty much everyone drives a nice car. I, on the other hand, drive a fairly weathered 1995 Nissan Sentra. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the commuter parking lot of the train station, nestled among all the Audis, BMWs, Mercedes and Lexus'. I am generally amused by the reactions I get from people when I park my car next to theirs, but I am less amused by getting pulled over by the town police all the time. They usually find some weird excuse (not signaling at a turn, when no one was around, literally going 3 mph over the speed limit, not slowing down on a turn at an "L" shaped intersection, with no oncoming traffic, etc.), but then they let me go when they look at my address from my license (so I really shouldn't complain ;) ) I suspect that they think I'm I'm from out of town, casing out houses to rob. :p

Yep, cuz you definitely want a wife who appreciates you because of what kind of car you drive.

Doesn't matter to me if people judge my by what I drive. Mine is probably the worst looking vehicle in the parking lot at school, including the students' lot. The insurance company declared it totaled in an accident a few years ago, and I've been driving it ever since.

But *I* judge people by how they treat me. If I go to a dealer and get treated like shit, I'm going to waste as much of their time as possible before buying elsewhere. AND, I'll make sure they're aware of why I made that decision.

At the high school I attended most students had nicer cars than the teachers.

Yes, because the girls I want to spend my time with only care about how much money I blow on my cars.

People that think they are defined by what they drive aren't the kind of people I chose to spend my time with. Cars are fun, it's a blast to drive a nice car, but if you look down on somebody because they've chosen to drive a cheaper car you're an idiot.

This almost sounds perfect from the buyer's perspective though. If you know what you want, and he doesn't think you can afford it, then you have control of the situation. Tell him that you might be able to convince your family (or anyone) to loan you the money if he sells it cheap. You talk about a price, make a fake phone call, and get the car cheap.

In fact, if I was going to buy a car, I'd take the worst car possible so they feel like they screwed you even if they only made $10 in commission on the sale.

Ahhh....the old "Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable" routine. I remember that episode. I think Gilbert Godfrey came in and ruined it by calling him "Dr. Huxtable" so the salesman knew he was a Doc.

I don't care what people think. I drive a 10 year old SUV that has 110k miles and plan on driving it another couple of years because (knock on wood) the maintenance is cheap and it's still in good shape. It may not be a $65k brand new car but at least I own it and the bank or dealer can't chase me down and take it back.

I don't really care what other people drive as long as they like it. I bought a new 2011 BMW M3 because I love to drive it, not as a status symbol. I drive it in jeans and ratty t-shirts. Even barefoot sometimes. I certainly wouldn't be doing that if I cared what people thought about me and was hoping it would elevate me in their minds.

With that in mind, I'll jump in my buddy's old beat up ford ranger any day of the week and not think twice about it. In fact, I've been thinking about getting a beat up old truck for utility (M3 isn't great on the utility end :p).

I hear you. I love driving as well. I don't consider a van or an eco-buggy a driving machine, which is why I'm working to a BMW Z4 in the next couple of years.

You can tell when you have the right car when you actually get excited to drive to the store :)

I drive this. What do people think of me?

scion-xa&
They think you never learned how to re-size pictures. Also that is the car I drive, same color and everything except the stupid aerodynamic plastic thingy that used to hand down in the front of mine no longer does, or at least the driver's side third no longer does. Mine's a 2008.

People who spend one penny more on cars than me are wasteful, self-centered turbo-douches and likely alcoholics. People who spend one penny less than I do are American Idol watching trailer trash and likely alcoholics. People who spend exactly what I spend are too cool for school and likely alcoholics.
