Self parody thread? The OP is the same person who thinks no one should ride anything less than a liter bike.

This. Also, most car dealers assume women are idiots. I always take a handy male along with me when buying a car and let him talk, he gets offered much better deals.

This absolutely still happens, and often with (shadier) mechanics as well. I've helped more than one female friend get a good deal or proper service. I enjoy it.

As for males being summarily judged, I detest old-school car salesman in the worst way. They and their attitudes are dying out these days, though. Smarter buyers, backed by the internet, etc., are making these clowns passe.

A good salesman stays hungry and is courteous to everyone, without fail.

There's no good excuse for anything else. There really never has been.

Funny I've had the opposite experience:
about 10 years ago, my mother's car was totaled. We had an old chevy caviar rental while we were shopping for a new car. One weekend we pulled up to a BMW dealer to take a look at their 5 series; we were dressed pretty casually, I was in jeans and a tshirt, my dad was in shorts and a tshirt. The salesman sees us pull up, and then after mentioning we were looking at the 5 series, tries pushing us to the 7 (which was out of our budget).

Also, when my sister was looking for a new car, she had her eye on a honda accord. I went a head to the dealership a few days before her to check it out. During the test drive, the salesman was mainly talking about the engine, the performance, and maintenance. When I brought my sister back a few days later, and she took it out for a test drive, the salesman (same guy) spent the entire time talking about the sound system. I couldn't help but giggle from the back seat, because it was SO obvious what he was doing.

I don't have an issue with that, although it is funny. Sounds like a smart salesman that knows who his customer is. Stereotypes exist for a reason.

I drive a beat up 97 Cherokee that has dents in almost every panel, tons of crap laying around inside, and an old school clip on wooden roof rack. I don't care what people think of me, because it's very likely my opinion of them is lower ;^)

I tend to judge people more when they buy a car that is pretty obviously beyond their ability to pay for it.

Yes.

If the car/truck gets terrible gas mileage, I figure the driver is pretty stupid.

LOL. Or they have enough money that they don't give a shit. Why drive around in a prius when you can afford to cruise around in an escalade?

Of course they do. Especially in that scenario, where the salesman's probably seen his fair share of tire kickers who simply can't afford a car. They waste his time, while another salesman picks up the people who can end up signing a deal.

Just like the story would have been very different if your wife showed up alone.

This. And the reason they do this is experience has taught them that stereotypes exist for a reason. The better salesmen will be able to put that behind them. Others don't care if they lose a sale or two because it means they won't have to spend extra time and energy dealing with the other 30 people that do fit the stereotype

I have a high pain tolerance. :hmm: Perhaps I deserve to drive a better car...

I need to stop trying to post before I get some caffeine in the mornings. Fixed the original post.

I drive a 1995 Nissan Altima with only 1 hubcap, rust all over. My floormats have a flower imprint on them. The stereo works but only with the stations programmed in already and only the radio portion. Only the rear left speaker works all the time. If I push on the stereo faceplate in the right spot I can get rear right working for a while. Driver's side sun visor flops around, windshield is cracked, heat kinda works.

My car conveys that I'm cheap. I still get ~20mpg and it only costs me $53/mo to drive with insurance and current gas prices. Sadly it is time to move on :(.
