do people really play "Second Life"?

I come across articles from time to time, and the game seems pretty pointless (even moreso than any other mmorpg), but the articles always claim it's some hugely popular game... and yet, I don't know a single person who plays it

same way with me. I read about people making money and having a good time. I know a lot of people who play video games and I am on a few big forums and I have never heard anyone talk about actually playing it. Ive tried it and it was ugly and glitchy as hell.

Maybe its SO addictive that the people that play don't even have time to talk.

I knew a bunch of people that used to play it from the WWII online forums. They kind of a did an invasion there and staked out a claim. Linden labs got alot of press out of it. Lots of people liked to go on there to try out their coding and art skills. WWIIOL guys went in there and figured out how to make guns/rockets/etc and made a bundle selling them.

It's not a game. It's more like an IRC server with graphics. Like the Sims.
Except with furries and pedophiles.:(

I know IBM has lobbies where they have meetings rather than video or voice conference. Everyone meets virtually. Kinda cool.

I was going for the "like the Sims" part :p, though IRC neither directly offers you a way to make money selling stuff to deviants or to graphically satisfy their demands.

I don't know anyone that uses it, but I do know that my ex-employer is about to do this big buy in to use it for recruiting. Virtual job fairs or something, I dunno. I told the recruiting brand manager it was a waste of their money and she said they don't expect to hire anyone from it, just get good press for being forward thinking.

I just downloaded it because I read an article about presidential candidates setting up campaign centers there....

But the getting started part is pissing me off enough that I don't care enough to continue.

There are way too many option details that I don't care about....I mean, "Footstep volume"? Who really cares?

I think the 'game' only costs like $10 a year to play or something, so that's probably part of the reason why there's so many subscription.

It's free to explore and that is counted as a subscription. So Liden labs numbers are way off on the number of people that actually play.
