Do people really need 10megapixels point-and-shoot cameras?

I thought 7MP compact point and shoot digital cameras were overkill when they came out but 10MP now? Most of these people will be printing to standard size 4x6 prints and occasionally to maybe 8x10 or 11x14. I'm sure the 4x6 prints from my 4MP camera will look just as good and sharp as from a 10MP (consider only compact point and shoot cameras).

Seems more to be just bragging rights. "Your camera only has 4 megapixels?...pffft mine has 10".

I don't print anything, but on the computer it looks great.

But who has a monitor that can display 10MP in full size?

If it means that hot college girls take even better pictures of themselves being naughty, then sure.

Nope. It just makes for longer write speeds, larger storage requirements, longer transfer to the PC, and more bloated email messages when the fsckers don't take the time to resize them before sending me pictures of their kids or whatnot.

And I also think that the higher MP counts are overdriving the dinky little sensors they put on there and give you sub-par picture quality over the more models pixel rated siblings.

Just my opinion.

I kinda wish my SD800 was more along the lines of 4MP instead of the 7.1 that it currently is.

It'll be like those thumbnails where they crop out all the bad parts and only leave you wondering what it is. When you click on it you're like OMG, I just went blind.

ZOMG! TEH PIXELZ! I MUST HAVE!

actually, as someone said, if you were to crop it, wouldn't it have a better picture quality than say a 4 MP?

the benefit of such high MP is that the camera can use that for accurate digital zoom (its really just cropping) instead of the standard digital zoom where new pixels are created as a blend of the neighboring pixels.

The problem though is that with a lot of P&S most people just set it at "auto" and the thing jacks up the ISO sensitivity so high at that point it's all just noisy pixeled crap. Again, I think that the high pixel ratings are really starting to really show the compromises made with the sensors and/or glass in the those tiny little compacts.

I find it funny that all the people I know that have digital cameras don't even use the maximum, or anywhere the maximum, resolution. They buy a 7MP camera "because it's 7MP!" and set it to take much lower res pics. I just looked at my GF's and it's set to 1.2MP, but she just had to have a new one "because the old one was only 4MP".

Why not? It's nice to be able to crop and zoom in without major loss of picture quality. Memory is absurdly cheap. You can get a 2 gig SD card for, what, $20?

i agree but also think that there is a lot of room for improving this with future software developments.

I don't think that's a "point and shoot" camera in the way the OP means.
