anyone here post from europe or asia? maybe australia?

do they show the results on TV? do they explain how the electoral college works? after they explain it, do you understand it?

do you think its weird that every 4-8 years our country changes so drasticly? is it like this in your country?

Wow, you talk as if we come from a completely different planet.

Many countries are operated in the way that your country is. Don't worry :D

i'm here now, but before i was in the US i only knew afterwards that 'x won the election' and that's it. never cared about the process either.
i have never even heard of electoral college until i got here and actually follow the overnight election show (the first one was the Bush vs. Gore so it's kind of exciting).

changes every 4-8 years? i think it's pretty common all around the world, especially for any kind of democratic countries.

Yeah - I watch, we usually have a political debating programme which covers the candidates and main issues (BBC Question Time). One of the big differences for us is that there is no limit on how many terms our PM can serve (plus the fact we're a monarchy - something I'd love to change).

I don't know why most people IN ths US watch the election results on TV. Watching it doesn't affect the outcome. Just watch the news the next day and see who won. Watching the poll numebrs has to be abuot the most boring thing you can choose to do.

TV coverage normally starts when the parties elect their candidates. Before this, the reports about the candidate-candidates ;) concentrate in newspapers and magazines. In TV they explain the basics of the election system fairly well (the all votes of one state for one candidate rule - but the persons in electoral college get no coverage at all). They then explain the opinions of the candidates (with an eye on potential influences on the Europe-US relationships). And then the election results (often with live reports, always with the two-colored map), some analysis (again mostly in print media), end of story.

A 4 year term isn't exotic but normal for most European countries, too. And the US doesn't have less than standard continuity, there aren't that many European administrations now who were in power when GWB got elected the first time. I couldn't even name one without to look it up. Well the majority of Swiss ministers was around then, but in our system the executive is relatively static (speaking of the individuals and of party affiliation) and changes manifest first in the parliaments.
