First off, don't worry about what other people think of you.
We've been to the islands many times. Yes, there is an undercurrent of dislike for non-native people. It's not in your face, it's subtle. We've never had a confrontation of any kind with a native Hawaiian, but we've had some minor issues with non-native folk living there. We paid for a tour of a macadamia nut farm on Molokai. It wasn't expensive, maybe $10 a head. At the end of the tour, the non-native guy that owned the farm gathered us around to try and sell us stuff. He hawked his wares a little and then proceeded to tell us that we should not even consider moving there. That we were not welcome and not wanted. My wife and I walked out. Non-natives will try to tell you how expensive it is to live there. We have even made friends of a couple that moved there from the mainland and built a home that tell us how expensive it is. After many trips we know what it costs. We've had a lot of smoke blown up our asses by both strangers and friends alike. It's an exclusive club and no more outsiders are wanted. Understandable.
We have had Hawaiians try to intimidate us with their jacked up trucks on narrow roads. We've been given an occasional dirty look. There is a deep sense of family within the native Hawaiians. Stay away from the parks on the weekends out of respect. It's their family time together and be respectful and let them have it.
I can fully understand that the Hawaiians are upset and fed up with the haoles. Their way of life has been turned upside down over the course of a century or so. This movement to rid the islands of non-native people has been simmering for decades and may or may not gain steam. A lot of negative things have arrived with the haoles. But I can tell you one thing for certain. They don't want to give up the type of homes they live in now, their cars, the availability of food, food stamps, welfare, fast food joints and the like. They'd like all the trappings of modern living, without the haoles. The haoles brought all that there.
They may want to go back to sacrificing to the volcanoes too. I don't know if haoles work for that or not.
BTW, we love the islands and the people and will go there every chance we get.
