Do people actually like watching tv with the "soap opera effect"?

At a hotel in Atlanta trying to watch tv - Ughh miserable. Everything looks... awful. Can't get into the settings on the tv so I'm stuck with this. Does anyone actually like this effect vs normal film look?

I was just in a hotel & couldn't turn it off either, it annoyed me the whole time

Some people don't notice. But an awful lot of people are running SD content on HDTV & think it's just great because it's on a big, colorful screen. I've had more than one time when I've switched someone from SD to HD on their HDTV (ex. cable box composite output to HDMI output) and have watched their jaw drop as they gaze in wonder at what real HD content looks like. So in the same vein, I think a lot of people don't realize they're seeing the soap opera effect.

I don't mind SD on HD at all, but man I can't stand SOE. I turned that off first thing.

Yeah, hate it. Have to put my Samsung TV into "Game Mode" to get rid of it.

But it will still render stuff filmed in that speed accurately. Damn glad I don't care for TV.

Even using the buttons on the TV you can't change settings? I know the remotes are generally useless, but at several hotels now I've been able to change the settings.
Some are certainly more locked-down than others though.

This far into the digital TV era and the aspect ratio is still all kinds of screwed up from channel to channel, at least at the hotels I've been to. At least most of them lately have allowed access to that setting through the menus, though they do of course revert to defaults with each power-up.

The Chargers/Steelers game looks pretty good, but anything not sports looks like ass. No way to adjust settings on the tv mehh.

Judging people based on them watching lower quality visual images while you admit to preferring lower quality images is more than a little hypocritical...
That effect is caused by increased visual information provided, not unlike going from sd to HD.
Noting this applies to things filmed at a higher frame rate and not from frame duplication.

I think they're talking about frame interpolation, not how people think 60hz video looks cheap because they associate it with the shitty soaps that used 60hz cameras because they were cheap at the time.

Football is actually shot in high frame rate and broadcast in 720p/60 (at least for Fox and ESPN) so it actually looks good. Nearly everything else is frame interpolation. Not worth leaving on unless you have a quick way to disable/enable frame interpolation just for NFL games.

Sports does benefit more from high speed than anything cinematic. You get to see Rivers' face contort after a pick in stunning smooth motion*. :D

* Only a Chargers fan such as I is allowed to make this joke :colbert:

Recently I had to disable frame interpolation on my sister-in-law's tv. Before doing that I asked her if she preferred the soap opera effect. She had no clue what I was talking about...fortunately her fiancé did.
