Ok, I have a wireless intellimouse explorer 3.0a and after about a month or so I've noticed it has caused discoloration of my desk. The desk is made of compressed wood(you know the fake wood stuff). Is this normal?

It doesn't exactly damage the desk, but it often rubs the surface coloring off. The places where I use my mouse on my desk are lighter in color than the other parts. I'm quite sure the discoloration isn't from the optical light thing. Don't worry about it. If you don't want your surface to wear away, get a mousepad.

Yes, the fact that I've worn away a patch of "wood" on my cheap desk has not lessened the ribbing I take from my wife for excessive computer use.

Yup, that looks familiar. I don't think I press down unusually hard--it's just a function of hard plastic scraping against wood over an extended period of time.

I think buying a mouse pad will solve your problem. (Ha I don't even have one, im using the cardboard from my motherboard box.)

Most desks today are covered with that fake wood laminant, or a clear coat of laminant, and after repetitive friction of the mouse going over it, i'd imagine it will wear that coating off to the point it's noticable. That's why I still use a mousepad.

I have a optical mouse as well, I had my mouse on my desk for about 2 years before moving to an Ratzpad.

The part of the desk where my mouse lays, is VERY SMOOTH, and faded from the rest of the desk color. I assume from the mouse sliding all around it, acting like sandpaper of a sort. You could run your finger above the "spot", though it, then under it, and you can feel the differences by far.

So yes, it does ruin a desk.

not from the optical thing but from rubbing the mouse, as others mentioned. Mine is all discolored now too. Got a mouse pad and it's fine. But these days i use a trackball.

Yea, I have that on my desk. I have this "adhesive" mousepad which is paperthin and works great. However the laser discolored the mousepad and the desk surface underneath!

I've got an MS Optical, just had a quick check under my RatPadz mouse mat and yup....the desk is pretty discoloured...think its the friction rather than the mouse thou...

I've got a smooth patch where I use my optical mouse.

And, for the record, optical mice use LEDs, not lasers, and it is just the friction from the little teflon pads on the bottom, nothing to do with the LED.
