I agree with the sentiment - at least for techie types. You are likely going to have a data-enabled phone with you anyway. Tethering or some option like that makes sense.

I just got the WiFi version - I plan on tethering it (sparingly) to my iPhone.

My iPad arrived tonight. So far my OOBE (out of box experience) is not so great. It requires activation to use, and plugging it in crashed iTunes. Then I tried to upgrade iTunes and it gave me a bunch of error codes about things it couldn't uninstall from my old version of iTunes.

I got it working after a lot of manual installation and about all that I have concluded so far is that it weighs more than it looks like it will and the screen is gorgeous.

LOL, that blew me away too, I thought it would just run.

Once you sync with iTunes, you never have to sync again.

I'm going the other route, and going back to a dumb phone, and a 3G enabled iPad.

The iPad is $15/month for 250mb, no contract
or $30/month "unlimited" no contract

I really think the plans should be cheaper but if someone really wants it they will get it. My brother is staying with his wifi iPad cus he doesn't want to pay another monthly bill for internet.

I'll consider sprint when they can get even just phone signal to my house. Then they can work on the data plan.

You will never hear me say that. iTunes is generally not my favorite piece of software.

My OOBE unhappiness continued. It offered to restore from a backup of my iPhone and I thought that this would be nice - all my contacts and apps carried over. And it was fine... except nothing worked right at all after the restore. I couldn't run any of the apps. They'd make a little box and then disappear. So I wiped the whole thing (reset all settings and erase all content) - which took seconds which is a pleasant improvement over the ridiculous amount of time it takes to clear an iPhone, and then set it up as a new iPad and things have been better since. I don't understand why it offers to restore settings if restoring the settings is going to make a mess of everything. :(

Beyond my irritation that it took an hour to get it to work at all, I'm still impressed with the screen and it feels really fast. But my kids have been using it ever since I put Doodle Jump on it and so I haven't been able to mess with it any more.

On the negative side, it won't charge out of the USB port on my Core i7 920 computer. :(

I'll try Skype later... when I get the thing back from my children. (bed time soon anyway)
