from the link:
"Those of you who are skeptical that those "DO NOT EAT" messages serve no purpose at all may note that I have in fact swallowed a packet of silica gel and suffered no ill effects. They are almost tasteless, although the experience reminded me of licking a postage stamp"

so yeah, if this guy's for real, why put the "do not eat" thing?...maybe the silicate absorbs some harmful humidity during the processing/shipping process?

don't blame me if u get sick...but i'm not gonna try eating that thing...

My 20 month old daughter ate one once, we were not sure if she even swallowed any so we called the poisin control center and they said not to worry even if she did eat the whole package.

The mystery is still unsolved. If anyone finds out why "DO NOT EAT" is an essential part of any silica gel packet, or how it got started, I beg that you e-mail me immediately and put my mind to rest.

Because in a few months your entire digestive system will metastisize and you will have major medical problems.

I'm still baffled at how someone could be so obsessed with silica gel! If you look at his pics there are tons of different packages that he sampled. It's almost like he wants to committ suicide, but is trying experiments in the process.

You can't fight Darwin, he ALWAYS wins.

Anyone who ignores a specific warning without knowing the potential effects is an idiot.

Stupid people die in stupid ways......and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Next he'll be wanting to sue because he got sick eating something he was specifcally warned against.

Silica Gel has the effect of drawing moisture out of the air and absorbing as much moisture as possible. The stuff isn't exactly good for you, but the real fear is that the packets look a lot like sugar/salt packets and they are required to specify that it's not food because it could easily be mistaken for food. It'd be the same if they packaged sand that way.

Just keep in mind that it's not poisonous...but your appendix would probably get a workout from it. :D

Funny you should mention eating packets of sand that way..... because silica gel is SiO2 = sand.

Chemists and the like use it for purification of compounds. When they use silica gel, it's in a powder form small enough to become airborne. While very fine grains of sand in your digestive system shouldn't cause too much harm (I would bet fiber is more abrasive than silica gel), you get it in your respiratory system and you're not doing so hot.

Remember when Kramer thought he was sabataging the Mayan clothing store by removing all the silica gel packets from the pockets? "Without dessicants these clothes will be noticeably musty in five years!"

And then he dropped a packet in the salsa accidentally and Jerry's gf's stepmom ate some... "I don't feel well at all. I feel all dried-out inside."

HA! :)
