Just some info for everyone. These files are write protected and do not allow you access. You can't change the name, delete, move, anything. You have to :
1 use windows explorer and remove any check marks under properties,
2 reboot,
3 shut all programs down except sys tray and explorer,
4 Go to ms dos and get into the directory where the file is
5 Type in del ****.wma
(**** = the file name)
I have Win 98 so maybe different for you. You might already know this info but it was a pain in the arse for me.
I have heard that this is Microsoft's version of an .mp3 file. Figures it would be trouble.

The file different file extension shouldn't be causing this problem. It was probably an isolated case from what i'm hearing, and even if a program locked up the file, a reboot should've taken care of that problem. Do you have some sort of other info about what happened?

I have had this problem locally when transferring mp3s burned onto a cd, then transferring them back to my HD. The write protection from the cd sometimes "sticks" and you can't edit the files' names, etc. The user you dl'ed from probably had the same problem I did, then shared the files.

Wacky Windows...

Yeah, I downloaded a Distirbd WMA from MTV a while back, and basically, it's a time limited MP3. WinAmp plays them, but after a while, when you try to play them, IE pops up and takes you to a site telling you its expired. That alone scared me, because I can see WMA files with malicious code cropping up soon here....I'd have to check, but I'm sure it's possible.

Napster only shares files with an MP3 extension as far as I was aware. Maybe the newer version does more, I'm still on an old one.

If it's write protected...you know you only have to right click on it (after making sure no program is actively accessing it) and uncheck "Read Only" on the Properties...

No, WMA is some sort of write protected file format developed by MS to keep the record companies happy (aparently depending on the internal tags/attributes you give it when the file is created, it can't be shared, backed uped or copied unless the initial creator of the file deems it so, well something like that anyway).

I don't see how that'd be possible unless M$ bribed every OS maker in existance now and in the past to update all OSes and make it so that any file with a WMA extension couldn't be renamed or modified. I'm sure any simple editor, even in windows, could modify those POS wma files.

Check the help section on Napster. It has lots of post from people with the same problem. Simply "right clicking" even after a reeboot did not work for me. Different OS's may handle these differently, I don't know. I'm not an expert, but I have been in the comp world for more than a few years. This file gave me fits.

On the burnt cd all you have to do is move it back to your hd and then uncheck the boxes in properites on that file.
