Do not connect to wifi if wired connection is present

I have an annoying situation here. This laptop is normally connecting to our home network through wifi, but occasionally I just simply plug it in. The trouble is it still also connects through wifi, which causes all sorts of hiccups and weirdness.
I do not want to disable the autoconnect feature, because it's normally used by my slightly IT illiterate father in law, and is also not leaving the house most of the time, so this setting is the best.
The question is: is there any way to make it not connect to wifi if wired connection is present?

Depends on the laptop, but most that I have used have a physical switch to turn wifi on and off.
lol
I just feel like a noob now. I didn't even think about that, and it was right in front of me.
It would be nice if it was possible to set this in Windows, though. Some sort of preferred order or something.

Just use the switch tbh, telling your father in law to press the switch if it isn't connected really isn't overly technical to my mind.

Don't feel bad. People bring me their laptops all the time complaining of no Wifi with the WIFI switch turned off. Most people have no idea it's even there.

I had an HP that took me a couple minutes to find. It was touch sensitive spot above the keyboard, not a button per se, and somebody had a sticker to cover it (I'm like you, I don't like to have wifi on when I'm not using it.)

Well yeah, but I make living on doing IT support (allright, just level 1, but still...), so I DO feel pretty bad, lol 😀

Sometimes the option is in the driver properties. Seems to have fallen out of favor though as it is missing from my new dell M4700 Ultimate N 6300...

Worst ever option like this was the Dells that would totally disable the wired NIC if you booted the machine on battery power.

I do it all the time with my Lenovo T510 - never a problem. If it is hard wired connected, it simply does not use the wireless. (Which is on the same router.) When I want to test the wireless connection, I unplug the Cat5 cable.

Before a trip, I also test my Verizon hotspot as well as my phone tether. Right now I am on a trip and using the Verizon hotspot in Pasadena, CA. Will be in Amsterdam, NL Saturday AM. 🙂
