Do NOT buy Diablo II yet...

I was one of the 1.5 million dolts that preordered Diablo II. (Even with 1.5 MILLION preorders, Blizzard claims to have been suprised by the "overwhelming response" to D2!) What I have received in exchange for my $55 is a game that is 99% hype. Does it have potential? Definately! Is it everything that Blizzard said it would be (all while beating their chest and boasting about their high Quality standards) NOT BY A LONG SHOT!

This is the most bug-ridden, unstable game I have ever played. The "closed-realm" multiplayer aspect that is supposed to prevent cheating is a joke. Does it prevent cheating? Sure, you can't cheat if you can't play 90% of the time! The majority of time it is impossible to create games (once again, Blizzard was unprepared and has limited the # of games allowed on the servers) and even when you can create or join a game, the lag is so bad that it is unplayable. Last night, I attempted to play for 15 minutes during which my ping never dropped below 500 and was usually 1000+. This is on a CABLE MODEM!

Even the single player game is bad. I can not use the automap or my computer will freeze every 5-6 minutes! The freeze lasts approx. 45 seconds and then the game plays for 20 seconds at 2-3x normal speed. I have read every Blizzard FAQ, updated every driver and the BIOS on my computer with no improvement. I (and MANY others) have posted this problem at the Tech Support site on numerous occasions. We have not received ONE FRIGGIN' response. Not even "We are aware of the problem and are working to fix it."

Blizzard spent nearly 4 years working on D2. Every time another delay was announced, the Blizzard execs would exault their efforts claiming that they "will not release a game until it meets the Blizzard high standards of quality." (paraphrase) As I posted in another thread, Blizzard has screwed the pooch with D2. It is a game with great potential, but is currently pitiful.

Save your money, enjoy the summer! When you see D2 for $30-40 this fall buy it. The time, money and agony you save yourself will be well worth it!

Since there have been many posts complaining of problems with the game, it sounds like D2 was not tested thoroughly enough for compatibility on varying system configurations. One person reports serious problems, the next "hey works great for me". Numerous DVD problems (something I haven't seen on other games, multiplayer problems, lockups etc... Sounds like D2 will be in for a series of patches.

One question I have, especially for games which need serious patches... Do publishers ever reburn and publish games which have been further debugged and patched by the developer, so that later off the self versions reflect this, assuming you can get a newer copy and tell that it is newer?

My system specs:
Asus K7V
700 Athlon
128MB Corsair PC133
Matrox G400 (32MB)
15GB HD (WD)
Netgear 10/100 NIC
Cable Modem

I think that the problem may be related to the Automap. Someone mentioned this on the b.net Tech Support board yesterday afternoon. I didn't have a ton of time available, but I did do a simple test. When I played with the automap on, the game froze like clock-work every 6 minutes. With the automap off, the game would pause briefly (2-3 seconds) but nothing like the 45 second freeze I have been experiencing. I only played this way for about 15 minutes, so I can't say conclusively that the problem is the automap.

From the posts I've read, it seems that there is a major problem with D2 and AMD cpu's. What is really annoying is that I participated in the (NERFED) Stress Test and never had a problem like this!

I really hope that Blizzard gets their head out of their ass soon. They had a great reputation in the gaming community. However, between the numerous server problems, the horrendous lag, the poor performance in D3D and other difficulties, they have fallen on their face with D2. The game DOES have potential, but the bugs are far too numerous right now, especially for a Blizzard product. If you are going to defend 18 months of delays by continually trumpeting "we did this to assure the highest quality" the customer has every right to expect a high quality product.

Sometimes they do but it's rare. The version of Thief bundled with the SB Live! Platinum is 1.33, the latest update.

Programming has never been more complicated and publishers have never been more greedy. Hence we are guaranteed bug-infested releases. The only solution is up to us: wait until the first/second/third patch comes out and then buy the game. I've been doing this for a coupla years now and gaming is more fun! You totally avoid the frustration period which can kill your impression of a good game.

The Dr:

I'm playing Diablo II on an AMD system and I am having none of the problems you are talking about(besides the realm server stuff but that's not our problem). I have already beat the game once with a Barbarian, and I am on my way to doing it again with a Paladin, I have had only one crash the entire time I've been playing, and no slow downs. I've also played a few open battle.net games with friends that have been fine, if you can deal with a bit of lag (of course my internet connection has a bit to do with that, I can get 33.6 if I'm lucky)I would definetly recommend Diablo II, its addicting as hell.

My System:
Windows 2000
AMD K7 Engineering sample (Athlon) 550 O/C to 650
Gigabyte GA-7IX
192 MB RAM (two 64 meg PC-100 sticks and one 64 meg PC-133 stick)
Matrox G400 MAX
Turtle Beach Montego II
6x Toshiba DVD
2 Fujitsu 6.4 GB HD's (5400 rpm)
3Com Winmodem (I know, I need to get a hardware one)

BTW: A good way to help stop the slowdowns is to copy the D2music.mpq from the play disc to your Diablo II directory.

The Dr:

I have almost the exact sma esetup as you ..CPU and MOBO at least. I have been playing for hours at a time and not a single lockup. Maybe I have been lucky so far.

I do agree that the game was not thoroughly debugged before going on sale, but at very least Blizzard is releasing updates as necessary. More than I can say for alot of other Companies.

BTW this is my setup:

Case: InWin Q500N-A 300W
Case: Cool: 3x80mm 12V Fans
CPU: AMD Athlon 750Mhz
CPU Cooler: OEM Fans
Motherboard: Asus K7V
RAM: Micron 256Mb PC-133
Video: Visiontek Geforce 2GTS(5.22 Detonator Drivers)
Sound: Diamond MX300 PCI Audio (Aurel Ref Drivers)
SCSI Adapter: Adaptec AHA-2940U2-OEM
NIC: Dlink DFE-530TX
Modem: Motorola Cable Modem (RoadRunner)
Floppy: Teac 3.5"
Mass Storage 1: Quantum 9.1Gb Atlas (LVD 7200RPM)
Mass Storage 2: IBM 9.1 Gb UltraStarIV (LVD 7200RPM)
CD-ROM: NEC CDR-1910A 32X SCSI-2
CD-RW: Yamaha CRW-4416S SCSI-2
HUB: 4 Port USB HUB
Input 1: Kensington Scroll Mouse In-A-Box (USB)
Input 2: Kensington Orbit (USB)
Keyboard: Generic Natural Keyboard (PS2)
Display: Dell VS17X
OS: Windows 98
Speakers: Altec Lansing GCS100 with 8" Bazooka Sub
Printer: Epson Stylus 640
Firewall: ZoneAlarm
Anti-Virus: Norton AntiVirus 2000
DirectX: Version 7.0

Are all the latest VIA drivers installed?
What about fastwrites? are they enabled or disabled? I have had many problems with fastwrites enabled, and truthfully i have not noticed a difference in performance. This might be due to the GTS though.

Make sure you have the lates Vid drivers too...though I am not to familiar with Matrox.

LMK if any of this works out for you....Oh, check your AGP aperature too. I have had several systems where it would not work at any setting other than 4....

The only problem I have experienced is an occasional "Your connection has been interrupted" and it kicks me back to the chat room. Besides that, game is running fine and now I can create games too, it doesn't say "server down".

Great game! Tomorrow I buy Dark Reign 2.

Some people have lots of trouble running D2, some do not. However the number of post on this site alone indicates that the initial release was substandard. Going to the Realms Message board will confirm this a hundred times over.
BNET is DEFINATELY bad, lag, being kicked from games or not being able to start games easily are very common problems. Hang out in a major channel and you will hear the screams of complaint.

Sometimes it's hard to say if a product is bad based on a forum like AT. Take the p3v4x mainboard. If you read only the complaints on this board you'd avoid it like the plague. However, people post because the board is so popular. And of course 80% of the p3v4x posts are pleas for help, 20% success stories. Bottom line is the p3v4x is a great board but troublesome for some.

Same is probably true for D2. Sure lots of complaints but they had well over 1 million pre orders. That's popular! Folks who aren't have trouble are probably enjoying the game.

The game definately has issues with 3DF cards (V2/V3 on my Bro's system for sure), and I occasionally get the 45 second stop when looking at the automap as well, but only when I'm hosting a Lan game...
