Do not buy 939 motherboards with side by side ram slots if you overclock

I'm having some ram stabilty and heavy heat issues with my EPOX now it's summer here. the ram is literally like 1mm spaced from one another not allowing any cooling between sticks getting really hot, like 150C bewteen the sticks and crashing. I have very limited case flow..setup for silence.

Here's what I mean

notice same color ram slots means supported dual channel slots and they are right next to one another above...

Here is what you really want.

Split up, so air can transverse bewteen memory sticks.

Boards to stay away from in 939 form (skt 754 doe'nt matter as you can force placement apart since it does'nt rely on DC) All Chaintech, ECS, foxconn, Soltek, Gigabyte, BFG and EPOX.

Nice boards for overclocking ram. DFI, ASUS, MSI, and Biostar.

*Abit -while side by side, comes with active ram cooler.. YMMV.

This is BS! I just put a fan on them..totally jury rigged with zip ties and finally I'm back stable @ 245Mhz 2.5-2-2 1T.

I should'nt *have* to put up with this extra noise though. I'm ordering a new mobo...

It's called 5V molex trick, Zebo 😉 That'll cool your RAM while quieting the fan.

i think dfi's solution is the best with the dimm running horizontally and spaced above the cpu. they get some air from the case's natural flow of the air front to back plus get a some off my zalman 7000 cu.

Auctually my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum's got the Dual Channel slots right next to eachother... The color coding is really deceptive on this board.

dun burn down the entire forest becoz of one bad tree...

my neo2 plat has dimm next to cpu ... working and OCing perfectly

Yea dude but I have no HSF. needs to cool by convection in my case and only separated sticks can do this. the inside sticks are TOUCHING!!! meaning they get hot as a mofo!!!

That's neo 4 in pic.

MIne are slots 1 and 2 but I have no issues with vdimm 2.8v or less cause I have AC.....90's coming this week but if last summer was indicative I wont hit much over mid 70's in my office....

I have shifted a case fan to aim at stciks...I dont have heat spreaders so I have a bit bigger of a gap to get air in there..I can actually fit m fingertips between the sticks...the do get hotter then anything else on this board....

A little note on the ASUS (or at least A8N), they have that 240-250mhz at 1T issue with the RAM. Seeing as how most of the folks who are overclocking on a budget (or simply don't want to pay 2x for 5-10% performance increase) it's not a big issue. That RAM is hideously close together though.

I wish i know how to use a digital camera up close i'd take some more pics of this touching. Sick how they designed these boards... almost every P4 board has it's ram spaced, not AMD:|

I have a fugi finepix s7000 if anyone knows to help me

I LOVE the spacing of my board.

I had to jury rig in a fan to cool my PWM circuits when I switched to water cooling, as they no longer had the cool air from the XP-120 blowing on them.

ever since i got my VX, i've used active cooling... i use a waterblock as well but my 80mm fan sits perfectly on top of it 🙂

Do you have macro enabled?

Don't use ANY zoom, just put the lnese closer..

Or if no macro setting there may be a wide angle setting that will also work. And as BJC said don't zoom, this will only increase the focusable distance from the object to the lens. Just put the lens as close as possible while maintaining focus.

On my old rig, I rigged a piece of plastic with 2 80mm fans on each end. I put it over the ram, and it acts like a wind tunnel. It sucks cold bottom air and shoots it over the ram and out the blowhole in my case. If u do this, ur ram problems will stop.

Yup yet another reason DFI owns all. I have heard though the mosfets get really hot.
