Do NICs for IMACs exist?

So I'm supporting this IMac, G4 I think, the one that looks like half of a white basketball with an arm extending out the LCD... And the ethernet jack is physically damaged.

It's got no PCI slots, and everywhere I go I can't seem to find a USB ethernet adapter for it. Do they exist? I found a bunch at macconnection.com but upon closer scrutiny none of them state anything about Mac OS support.

Any help on how to get ethernet for this thing would be appreciated.

What version of Mac OS you running? Is it OS9 or OSX? If it's OSX I bet there is built in support for a lot of USB Nics. Write back with what OS you are running and I will do some looking around for you.

If nothing else works I would consider installing OSX. Besides more support it will work so much better than OS9. Will do some looking around.

My advice:
Find a used "AirPort" card to use wireless. Also consider upgrading it to 512 MB and running Mac OS X 10.3.

The exact AirPort card and memory type depends on the model you have. The earlier iMac G4 had a PCMCIA-like AirPort (802.11b) card and PC100/PC133 SDRAM DIMM slot. The later iMac G4 had a MiniPCI-like AirPort Express (802.11g) card and DDR SDRAM DIMM. There may be some models inbetween too, so you'll have to research it a bit.

Belkin and Dlink make Mac compatible wireless access points and usb cards and are WAY cheaper than any Apple branded solution. You may want to check em out. For what you pay for an Airport solution you can probably get 2 belkin or dlink solutions! I hate the way Apple rips people off with their products.

Cards are no go. The limitation is not in the OS but in the hardware. iMacs have no PCI slots; do not take PC Cards; & therefore are upgradeable chiefly through their ports. Mac ports sometimes send a different amount of current through a port than PC's do. D-Link used to make a USB to ethernet adapter which was advertised as Mac compatible. They later withdrew the description. Sometimes Linksys products "just work" on Macs although Linksys generally does not promise Mac compatibility or support. Perhaps you could pick up such an adapter at a local brick & mortar with a liberal return policy. The wireless connection to an ethernet/wireless router may not be that expensive if the Mac already has an 811 g card installed or 811b if it's an earlier model. Some Mac users report success with Buffalo networking equipment on Macs--cheap at Fry's.
For a better understanding of this particular Mac's capabilities go to
http://www.lowendmac.com
Click on "iMac" under COMPUTER PROFILES in the right-hand bar & you can get most of the spec's for each model. Use this info along with whatever you dredge up from clicking on 'About This Mac' on the individual computer & then clicking on through to generate a text based report in the Apple System Profiler. You will get more details in the printable report than if you just view the info displayed on screen.
Also helpful is to go to Apple & see the User-Serviceable Parts list for this particular computer in case it is still under warranty with Apple.

Very likely only the Airport card & RAM are replaceable for this family of iMacs without voiding the warranty. I'll bet pretty much everything is soldered to the motherboard.

Just wondering... Why is it still on OS 9? Legacy software? Don't want to pay upgrade prices for OS X software?

Cuz OS 9 sucks. :p

Thanks. This answers everything for me. Gotta figure - for every Mac hardware expert here there's gotta be like 1000 PC hardware experts.

I hear ya! At work I have so many cool high-end macs but we keep em on 9.2.2 because we dont want to buy licenses for OSX Quark. And the version we use wont work in OSX Classic mode. :(
