Do nForce2 Ultra 400 boards require 2 DIMMs?

I know that nForce2 Ultra 400 boards are dual channel, but does this mean DIMMs must be installed in quantities of at least 2?

I remember the original nForce2 would default to single channel if only 1 DIMM was installed.

If you use 1 DIMM then you will just run in single channel mode. They are not like old RAMBUS boards which requried pairs.

Thanks 🙂

I read Anand's article from two years ago that said using only 1 DIMM would just make the board run in single channel mode, but I didn't know if this was still true. Though if DIMMs had to be installed in pairs, it would not make sense that all the nForce2 Ultra boards have 3 DIMM slots.

if you have e.g. 2x256mb sticks in DC, you can add a 512mb stick and it still works dual channel. this is what I read anyway, I have 3x256mb sticks in my NF7-S rev2 and it still says it's working in dual channel. IIRC dual channel isnt all that faster anyway, kind of a neat bonus but nothing to get too excited about.
