Do New Yorkers tend to speak fast?

Yesterday at work, I had a 2 hour workshop covering the migrations of my project plans into the new project portfolio management toolset, and the American (from NY) running the workshop was speaking incredibly fast. I could just about follow his ramblings.

In general, but usually only true native New Yorkers. It's hard to generalize an entire area.

Yes we do. Despite my not living there for 15 years people keep asking me to talk slower.
To which I reply "Listen faster"

As a general rule, the faster they talk, the more full of shit they are.
Being that New Yorkers are usually full of shit........

Someone from New York.

That's like saying a "Brit".

Someone from Scotland speaks in a decidedly different way than someone from Liverpool.

Likewise someone from Brooklyn speak in a way unlike someone from Rochester.

A generalization would be that the closer one is to NYC the faster the speaker tends to talk.

I've been told to slow down before while talking, but I doubt that's because I was from New York.

Oh hell yes. And on top of it all, I live in the south, so it's twice as bad. I had no idea I talked as fast as I do until I heard myself on a message I left someone. Lived in Brooklyn until I was 14, but I have been gone 30 freaking years and I still talk like an auctioneer.

My WoW guild is mostly Californian and they all sound stoned on ventrilo, just really taking their time to speak. Most of them actually are stoned. But even the ones who aren't sound it. I'm in Westchester, so I'm close enough to NYC.

I can talk ridiculously fast. Almost no one can understand me until I make a real effort to slow down.

You don't know sh!t son. Well maybe you're right about suburban New Yorkers but real New Yorkers (NYC) know everything there is to know.

I like it even though I talk slow. NYers generally are straight biz, speak their mind and poinent.
