There's a new energy drink out that promises a "five hour rush." It's LOADED with a couple of B vitamins (B12 and I can't remember the other) with something like thousands of percent of the RDA. Even if it's a placebo effect, it works pretty well.

It's not a placebo, I've seen guys come back into my store after buying one about an hour later. They were all kinds of hyper n stuff, and bought some more of the 5-Hour Energy. It's made by a company called Chaser.

Not all vitamins are created equal. The ones you buy at the supermarket may as well be chalk.
Assuming quality vitmains, they do more than make one's excrement a good source of vitamins.

I'm not forming an opinion on your claim one way or another, but your situation is like the textbook definition of placebo.

To answer the question I do get nauseated if there is nothing in my stomach when I eat my vitamins.

I should have tried it without looking at the label. That would have been more fair.

Its the zinc and C that do you in. They make you feel nauseated because they are eating away at your stomach lining. Always take vitamins with food.

The whole point of placebo is that it's in your mind.
One has to not know what they are drinking.

In order to be scientific, yes, but a drink that works in a blind test (better than placebo) should still work when the subject DOES know what's going on.

I think you reached the final part of the study.

The point I'm saying is there is no semblance of a study what so ever.

Never done that to me or anyone else that I've heard of. Especially not buffered C (with Calcium Ascorbate instead of Ascorbic Acid).
Like any trace mineral, you should watch how much Zinc you take in anyway or it's toxic. Wiki

Yea, you are supposed to take vitamins of any kind on a full stomache. The vitamins are better absorbed that way with food.

Yep, and I wouldn't consider the popular Centrum a quality vitamin. Would you? Like so many other things, it's popular by marketing and word of mouth.

And the fact that you only absorb a small percentage is why they contain so many more than 100% of the RDA, correct?

Supposedly Calcium is one of the hardest to get from a supplement, and you only get a very tiny amount from them.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond.

Vitamin B is useless because the body destroys almost all of it in the stomach with certain acids and enzymes (and it does not work by mega dosing, because the body will just create more enzymes to destroy it, especially in supplemental form, in food it can be absorbed better, one of those mysteries), and only very small trace amounts are absorbed. Injecting it however allows large amounts to get into the blood stream and gives an amazing energy burst that can last for longer than a week. Most people are deficient in vitamin B, so a shot of it can really make you awake. There is also a lot of it in those emergency IV's ambulances carry.

I always inject B12 into my glute before a competetion, always great for that added burst. Many NFL players get a weekly injection Sunday morning.

To the guy with the energy drink, unless it has caffeine in it I am absolutely sure it was a placeboo effect.

Actually vitamins are abosorbed better on an empty stomach, as with most supplements, but for many people to get nasuous daily would be too much so they recommend to take it with food.

Centrum is an alright multi vitamin, as far as one pill multi vitamins goes. The best multi should be multi pilled (capsules preferbly) that have different absorbtive coatings which allow for the vitamins to be absorbed at different times. Or you can take seperate pills at different times.

Actually calcium is the easiest. As if calcium is taken, it is going to be absorbed before anything else. This goes also for Zinc and Iron (which some companies stupidly combine all three). The hude RDA values are more for marketing than actually effciency. I have a book that did a test on all major vitamins, and their abosrbancy. Centrum was around 4%, something such as NOW Adam, or Animal Pak, were around 40%.

As with any supplement, it is there to add to, or in addition to, an already healthy diet that contains the vital vitamins and minerals, along with antioxidants you need.
