I want those who are arguing with me to ACCEPT their responsibilites: That they realize that riding a motorcycle is unsafe and that making their motorocycles loud is socially irresponsible.

MotionMan

You driving your car with it's excess emissions compared to a bike is just as socially irresponsible. You're a hypocrite.

Would you like to come over and compare penis size?

How about muscle size?

How about bank account size.

I know, let's have an IQ test.

You know so much about me that you think that you would have chance in any of those contests? BTW, you may have a louder motorcycle than me (I bet you did not think I rode, did you?)

MotionMan,

You asked your question and it was answered honestly by riders with more years experience on bikes than you've been alive.

Why are you still debating with us?

Because the simple fact is he hates motorcycles.

No, I hate really fycking loud motorcycles that scare (and wake up) my children and make me jump out of my office chare from hundreds of feet away.

I do not think that is unreasonable.

Because it inconveniences, he'd rather have them all off the road and is using safety as an issue to veil his hatred and justify taking them off the road.

You call it an inconvenience. I can it an invasion of the publics right to quiet enjoyment.

Stay on the road, just don't bitch about it when you do.

MotionMan

A bike puts out far less emissions than a car. I say you driving a car infringes on the public's right to clean air.

You know so much about me that you KNOW I drive a car?

We can all be irrational, can't we?

Well, at least one of you can.

Also, you are grossly exagerrating how loud the sound of most bikes are. There is no way in hell that you are being jarred from your chair when you're 10 floors up and hundreds of feet away.

Sorry, but that is EXACTLY what happened. That is WHY I started this thread.

MotionMan

Pansy. You act like it's really affecting the quality of your life. And if it really is, you have deeper issues you probably have to deal with inside.

Why not? You think you know so much about anyone with a loud bike to assume they have small penises.

So how about it? Which would you like to compare first?

i was pretty sure you rode, but you probably ride like a squid, not caring if other cars see you or not.

So you're a employment lawyer and you ride work? Bet it sure messes up your suit riding to work every day, or it must be a pain having to change in and out of your riding gear and into your suit at the office.

But let me guess, you don't own a car and only take mass transportation now, right?

Yes, the real issue is safety. Loud pipes make people look for me. They are a proactive measure of safety. I prefer them to sounding like a ridiculous ice cream truck as you suggested we do. You don't. "like" is subjective. Get over it.

I understand that it's a safety measure. No one is arguing that. What people have a problem with is your choice of going about it.

You would rather annoy people because of your preference when a possible lesser annoying sound is an alternative.

"Annoying" is subjective. And ANY loud noise, be it from pipes, or from an ice cream truck is going to annoy some people, and please others.

You cannot please all of the people all of the time... but one thing is for sure: I will have a loud bike as long as drivers act like they are blind. If they can't see me they sure as hell are going to hear me.

Also, wearing brighter colors should help. Why not do that along with the loud noise?

I do. Most of my riding clothes and jackets are orange or red. My Bike is mainly white and has not only a headlight, but passing lamps as well.

My headlight also strobes. My tail light flashes. There isn't much more I can do to be seen. But if they don't see me, they WILL hear me... and there isn't a damn thing anyone is going to do about that. A bunch of whiny little nit pickers are NOT going to convince me to make riding any more dangerous than it has to be.

I agree with your intent. I believe you should be as safe as possible.

I don't agree on your choice though, but that's something that I can't do anything about as you say.

But I'm not so sure about your last statement. I believe the police are starting to crack down on motorcycle noise more and more; at least in California.

If it's above the legal limit, they can and should crack down on it.

My pipes are loud, but far from open. I have the Vance and Hines Big Shot Longs with the "quiet" baffles that tone them down a bit at idle.

No cop in CA is going to give me grief, and if he did I'd have the ticket thrown out.

THAT is why we do it. I agree that open pipes are a bit much, but stock is ridiculous and unsafe.

People have loud motorcycles because it warns people about their presence? Seriously, no one believes that.

Yes, I see them, I am sure a less annoying/deafening sound can be used though. Anyway driving a bike is pretty risky, but justifying a risk you willingly take at the expense of causing annoyance to others is something I dont completely accept.

I don't think anyone riding a motorcycle is under any delusions of safety. However, non-riders tend to VASTLY exaggerate how unsafe it is. Go study--not just read--some statistics, and you'll see that bikes aren't really that bad. Hell, if I believed you guys, I would be dead three times over by now, since I've been commuting to work every day for months now.

As for the noise factor...I agree that there is a certain point at which the noise becomes more than a safety measure, and indeed a public nuisance. In my experience, it's mostly Harley riders who are guilty of crossing the line...but that could be my personal bias. Well, there are already noise ordinances in effect pretty much anywhere people live...it's not my fault the cops would rather catch people going 5 over the limit than people who drive carelessly, people who blast rap through residential neighborhoods at 2AM, and open pipes.
Tell you what...if you can get the cops to start cracking down on people who honestly can't drive, people who don't signal, people who don't look before changing lanes, and people who talk on their cellphones in heavy 50MPH traffic, I'll start sneaking out at night and installing bigger mufflers on motorcycles.

You'll believe it when you actually ride, and notice a HUGE difference between riding a loud bike in traffic, and a quiet one.

And that's a bunch of bullshlt, too. Loud pipes piss other people off. Same goes for loud-ass car stereos at the stoplight, too.

If cars are required by law to have mufflers, motorcycles should be, too.

Well, being hit by cars is pretty fscking annoying too. When cars stop being blind to bikes I'll stop being loud.

How many years have you rode?

Have you rode a quiet bike and a loud bike... and both for signifigant periods of time in heavy traffic?

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

BTW, you can be as pissed off as you want about my loud bike. But the fact that you heard me, looked for me, and spotted me is all that matters to me.

I'd rather you be pissed than me be dead.

Let's just put it this way, people hit other CARS. Large vehicles. What makes you think just by driving safe you won't be hit.

Anyway. I am done for the evening. I have to put my kids to bed.

Hopefully, no motorcycle will decide to "safely" ride down my block and wake up my kids.

This has been a fun exercise. Very enlightening.

Since I was 8. Bikes don't have to be as loud as the Harleys with straight pipes. They can be loud without being deafening.
The rice bikes with the hi-perf. pipes aren't loud until you really open them up.
I'd like to see some statistics about which have more accidents because of cars not seeing/hearing them...Harley-types or rice rockets.
I know plenty of dudes that rode Hogs that have gotten run over. Very few were because they weren't seen.

maybe cars should also start blasting music so bigger vehicles can see them
