Do most laptop speakers sound soft?

I'm using my friend's Dell and his sound is awfully soft. I'm trying to watch a DVD on it and it is really soft. Is there a setting to make it louder? It's a Dell 600m.

Mine get loud but they get so distorted it's not worth it. Just use headphones.

mostly i have discovered they are really harsh in the high's and have no lows so i dont know where you get soft from.
