do most cell providers let you switch areas at no cost?

if I get a major cell plan in Sac, will I be able to take it to Santa Barbara and get my number switched to that area code at no charge?

Some make you extend your contract. Verizon will do it without an extension, but Sprint makes you do a new contract. In my experience at least.

It will take you less time to call your provider than to wait for accurate answers here.

Also, answers may conflict based on the provider or peeps guesses.
