Do Mormons in Utah launch more rescue operations than any other group?

I am sorry, but what's up with these Utah/Mormon kids and their (lack of) intelligence? Yeah, I am glad they found the kid. Definitely. I would hate to have a child lost in the woods like that. I'd hate to be lost myself. What a horrible situation to be in. And the community pulled together to work the miracle of finding him. Great.

Now let's recap the situation. Very much like Elizabeth (not-so) Smart, he did everything counterintuitive to being found. He went uphill and away from camp. A camp which they said is difficult to miss so he should have been able to see it at a higher elevation. (I am just assuming here). His parents taught him two lessons: never leave a trail and never talk to strangers. So when rescuers on horseback came on the trail, he had a problem. He couldn't leave the trail but he couldn't talk to these evil and mysterious strangers, either. So he chose to give up the first for the latter. So he hid til they passed and then resumed walking away from the camp, up the mountain, on the trail. When asked to explain his ordeal or how long he was gone, he wouldn't say much. He didn't know how long he was gone (count the nights?) or where he had wandered to. It's ironic that the Mormon community is so strong in their community and help for one another yet the only reason that is needed is because their children (young and older, remember the guy who went hiking up trecherous areas without much food or water and got his arm stuck in the boulder?) do stupid stuff. And no, getting lost is not stupid. But hiding from rescuers (Hawkins), not bringing supplies or telling anyone where you were going (Ralston) , and not walking out the door and down the street to your home (Smart), is!

Thoughts?

Well they usually have 7 wifes and tons of kids. Tracing back your roots, everyone in Utah is actually related, thus when someone is missing, the whole extended family comes out to search for them.

Troll?

Utah is tough, barren, and sparsely populated country. It attracts a lot of amateur outdoor adventurers, and it's easy to lost or killed out in the wild there. In addition, the people there are willing to drop everything to stage a rescue at a moment's notice. This is bad?

Troll? Give me a break.

I am sorry but if by "attracts" you mean people who currently live there and probably have for generations, you are not talking about the same people I am. These are people that are residents and are getting lost in their backyard. Getting lost, again, is not the stupid part. It's taking counterintuitive actions that are. After your post again, it seems like the ENTIRE thing has absolutely not relevance to my OP. Try again.

Edit: Vic, another poster pointed out that you were probably referring to a different post. In that case, my apologies.

I agree. They do seem to lack common sense. I believe it stems from being so sheltered and religious.

First of all, Ralston is not from Utah. Second, the boy is mentally slow...that explains why he hid from the rescuers and couldn't find his way back. Makes you wonder about the supervision though. Third, Elizabeth Smart was brainwashed.

i actually heard an interesting theory on the radio that its all a conspiracy by the mormon's to gain publicity and to bolster their numbers and to maintain the doubters by telling them they were discovered by god's will. and the people who are facing jail time for the smart kidnappings? modern day martyr's. not saying i believe all that and it might be time to put the tinfoil beanie aside, but then again, stranger things have happened.

Is that what they call "stupid" nowadays?

Edit: She was brainwashed by her parents for being such looney religious freaks.

msparish - Your post has such conviction it makes me think you know what you are talking about ... until your last line about Smart being brainwashed. Honestly now...

Not to take anything away from the searchers efforts, but I it haunts me that the rescuers didn't search initially in the direction the kid traveled because they figured "Who would would walk that in that direction".

makes you wonder about what?! that everything is 20/20 in hind sight? ya keep sittin on that couch of yours and criticizing the search crew. Next time some kid is lost we'll make sure to call one of you two geniuses because you'll know exactly what to do.

Yes, it does. At the very least, something could be learned from this.
