Do modern-day pirates exist?

We're going on a cruise to antarctica, wondering about pirates. anyone had run-ins with pirates?

If you really want to know, the boxes they label "Life Jackets" actually have Stinger Missiles in them, and under the tarp for the lifeboat, there are RPG's. There are also Rifles and machine guns under the floorboards/

other than africa, asia, south america, and some parts of europe, north america and australia, you're fine. no, seriously. the planet is covered in thieves, and the isolation makes you a more vulnerable target. unless it's your own boat, you might not be allowed to bring weapons. i wouldn't worry if it's a big cruise ship, but if it's a small one it might be a tempting target full of rich tourists for looting and raping and ransom. enjoy!

Pirates have never stopped pirating.

They are not going to be going after a cruise ship though.

What happens is they stalk ports and then follow out people they know with big bank...they also use radar on the open seas to target uber yachts.

Most people don't try to sail alone in open territory...there is safety with multiple boats and radios.

I am not saying they don't, but we are talking US/near US waters here. I haven't read about Carnival getting overrun by pirates. Hell, I go offshore quite often and I have never really considered "pirates" in my safety plan.

So besides the question "wtf... a cruise to frickin Antarctica?" let's examine a well organized pirate raid vs. your average cruise ship. We're talking Carnival, Norwegian, etc.

Not only does the cruise ship have a well armed, trained, ex-military security detail but also access to satellite communications and long range radios. Now unless Capt. Hook can jam those frequencies (don't think so) the boat will see strange people with parrots many miles away and alert nearby friendlies. Friendlies with large weapons.
