Wow, great article. I am amazed NFL players don't wear them and they are actually considered "different" for wearing one.

AFAIK all of the MLB players wear cups. The odds of them being able to have children after getting hit in the balls by a 95mph fastball while not wearing a cup would be extremely low :Q

Apparently nobody in the NFL wanna be called gay, so they don't grab nuts in the pile anymore. So there's no longer need for the cup.

Wow, that is retarded.

No it isn't, they're removing themselves from the gene pool when their balls are trashed in some accident and can't reproduce anymore. Either that or they don't have any left because of steroids.

There is no protection when they are doing the snap. :Q

Heh - I played center in high school. In a scrimmage, our backup QB kept racking me to the point where I had to come out. Fortunately, I was still able to have children.

I found a cup too restrictive when trying to run. Think of it like the WRs that don't wear kneepads. They sacrificing a little protection in favor of faster running and better maneuverability.

If I played behind the plate in baseball (catcher or umpire), I'd sure as hell wear a cup. You can bet they do from little league up through the MLB too.

Doubtful. In highschool football it was part of the required gear. Though many of us didnt wear them. In college i didnt know a single guy on our football team who wore a cup. And in the NFL? Doubtful as well. So it wouldnt surprise me if Major League baseball didnt wear cups.

How did this turn into an NFL thread? Yes, MLB players wear cups. Some wear hard cups, others wear soft cups, depending on your position\preference. AFAIK there is no rule that says you have to, whereas in Little League I remember it was mandatory. I've seen replays of inside pitches ricocheting clear off someones cup before. Can't look for em on the youtubes right now sorry.

I didn't wear a cup my first few years in little league. Then I took the catchers cleat to the balls whilst sliding into home plate.

After that I always wore a cup. A few years later I took a line drive to the balls while playing third base. It was hit hard enough that it actually cracked the cup, and left a giant bruised outline around it. Better than the alternative I suppose.

I always wore one from little league to HS when I was behind the plate. Now I'm playing goal in an adult ice hockey league and my cup is more like a bullet proof groin protector.

Yes, well any youth program that doesn't make players wear a cup is being negligent. Once you are an adult you can make your own choices.

You still get hit there inadvertantly, wear the damn thing, it's not like it hinders movement. I wear a girdle for hockey and the cup is built in... coolest thing ever - not obstructing at all.

I am guessing most baseball players do. They adjust a lot when up at bat and it's not just to move their sack.

a few pitchers dont wear them. ive read that a lot of them find it distracting and inhibiting in their delivery and movement. funny this came up as jake peavy took a comebacker there a couple weeks back and a few fans were surprised to hear that he doesnt wear one for the reasons listed above. when asked if he would reconsider he joked that he already has a couple kids and isnt planning to expand his family anytime in the near future.
