do memory sticks have to be identical?

I think in the old days you could only upgrade your memory with two identical 'sticks' of memory..so 2 sticks of 4mb (those were the days) for instance.
But I thought that nowadays it doesn't matter...so at the moment I have one stick of 128mb pc133Mhz SDR...can I just throw in a stick of 256?...or does it have to be 128?
sorry about this stupid question, but I am not quite sure...

rdram on current p4 mobos i believe has to be paried.. however with sdram and ddr sdram you can mix sizes.. and even speeds.. you can underclock a faster stick of ram...

oh ok..that's what I thought, but wasn't sure about...
it's not a P4, I have a duron 700 and a Gigabyte Ga7-zm mobo...so it should be ok...

Yea, 133 Mhz ram will just default to the lower 100Mhz ram speed if used.
