I expect some problems, but transmission seems to be an issue with that model year after year.

I think it's damn funny that he's complaining, 70,000 miles is enough to expect repairs..

You have low expectations.

So long as the maintenance schedule is followed, no car should need major repairs (like a new tranny) in 70,000 miles.

How many miles? Did you buy it new?

Auto tranny?

No tranny problems?

My ex has a 1992 626 with 200K miles. I believe the transmission was replaced once at ~130K. It is a 5 speed manual.

You better get rid of it while you still can.

I have owned 2 mazdas ('92, '93), and they both are the suxors. Although I do admit the new generation of Mazdas do appear to be improved greatly, but I would still never buy a Mazda ever again. When I even hear the word Mazda I cringe a little bit.

i bought a 1990 mazda protege new in nov of 1989
it now has 184,000 miles, runs great, starts right up everytime

only major work i have had to do was replace the front axles (CV joints went out) at about 100,000 miles
the A/C went out in 1999, but i didn't get it fixed

so it has cost me less than $0.10 per mile over the past 15.5 years

i forgot, i did have to replace the radiator, but it wasn't too expensive

Actually, with the 92-99 Mazdas, the only real problems were:

1. Crappy auto trannies that die early
2. Some earlier models had spark plug harnesses that corroded and cut out VERY early
3. They quickly become rattle traps.

Other than that, I've seen no other pattern.

Once you fix those problems, they seems to be fairly bulletproof.

Like I said, my '97 626 has over 200k on it.

Yeah, the tranny problem seems to be isolated to the 626/mx6 series auto trannies I think.

Transmission is an absolutely required part of the drive train which happens to be very expensive, so even if its reliable excluding tranny, you really can't exclude it, because fixing it is such a high ticket repair.

Our MPV had to be towed in because it stopped working at all and a few days later, repair bill costing over 60% the value of vheicle at the time.

the timing belt and brakes were basic maintenance things, not repair bills. ANY car with 100K and a timing belt is going to need it changed, and they tend to be expensive no matter what car you drive. the radiator is "eh" since lots of cars that old need new radiators. the tranny definetely warrents complaint, though. no excuse for a tranny to need repair that early.

Thats because Mazda used a Ford Transmission very similar (if not the same) in design to the one used the in the Taurus of the same vintage for the 626/MX-6. Ford's Electronic 4spd Transmissions are utter garbage.

I hope ours does better. 2004 bought this weekend :) Lots of warranty on it though.

I looked at your repairs. they are expensive but not that bad. Brakes, for instance, are normal wear and tear. Automatic transmissions die and that's a fact of life (well, so do manuals, but it's much cheaper to fix). i guess you got unlucky :(
You're lucky. You got a manual. The auto trannies fail very early on these cars.
Thankfully I have four years of powertrain at the amount we drive. I'll see how it does over the next 85k and will definitely consider trading it off before the powertrain warranty ends ;)
Put it up on F/S F/T. Sell it to Skoorb. He'll never know.
I will now :|

FWIW I think mazda's really tried to increase its market share aggressively lately and come out with some interesting products. In the past I'd never had any interest in it, but it at least has some vehicles worth considering. We bought the MPV because for import minivans it was the only one in our price/warranty/mile range that satisfied. The big three japanese were far more expensive. Admittedly I only did some minimal research on it because it's a minivan and it's not that fun to shop for.

What do you mean? A co-worker yesterday mentioned he was driving a friend's 94 protege I think it was and the spark plug shot out of the cylinder, hanging by the plug wire or something!

No, nothing like that. The spark plug wires would lose conductivity, and you'd start missing (not firing all cylinders).

This happened on all three of my Mazdas.

I dunno, the 93-97 MX-6 was a beautiful car.

Maybe my maxima love blinded me, but prior to the past couple of years nothing from mazda ever made me horned up except for the RX7...
