Well I heard from a few of my friends that it is true, they went into some woods and found a way to get the button stuck, and let it sit a while and it blew.

It seems to make sense that the metal would heat to a certain point and burn through the plasitc. But wouldnt that mean a lot of concert goers would be going up in flames?

Can smoeone explain this whole thing?

Well, my friends and I stupidly threw what we thought was an emply lighter into a campfire...

So they do blow up, but I haven't tried just holding down the button.

It only would if there was a leak in the butane resevoir. Otherwise, it should be just like a spraypaint can. As long as the button is pushed, there is enough pressure for the butane to blow away from the resevoir.

We used to take those cheapy clear lighters and remove the metal guard, then throw them in down in the street really hard. If the steel hit the flint and the lighter broke, it made a nice little fireball. Not the smartest thing on earth, but pretty cool when you're twelve. :D

instead of waiting, just leave some fluid inside & whip the lighter @ the ground (preferably cement/pavement)

Spray a lighter with lysol. You will see a nice blowtorch. I tried it on candle, it actually works even better. Just don't be standing too close, as you may get burned.

So what you;re saying is that at no point will the metal bracket heat up enough from the flame to melt through the casing?
