do li-ions get damaged by low charge?

I have a laptop that I had with the lid closed, in standby for a while. Well eventually even the tiny amount of current that S3 standby draws ran down the battery. It's been sitting for probably a few weeks since then.

I seem to remember hearing that li-ions will be permanently damaged so they don't have as much capacity if you leave them for too long without recharging.

Is that true? would the capacity be permanently stunted by just leaving it uncharged for a few weeks?

That's what you get for posting on ATOT and expecting a useful answer.

The basic answer is yes, LiOns are damaged by sitting discharged for extended periods of time. In comparison, NiMHs can be taken down to 0V, and reverse-voltage is what messes them up. You may have dodged a bullet depending on how much of a safety gap was built into the battery circuits. The usable cutoff is probably set higher than the real danger voltage, and as long as the battery didn't self-discharge much farther, you're still okay.

What does it matter what might be happening? Try charging the laptop up and see if there's a noticeable decrease in effective capacity.

It depends what you are chaging at your Lions with...

...I bet a jeep would do some damage, but a razor scooter probably wouldn't hurt them much...
