Do LED backlights fade over time?

The #1 problem I've had over the years with LCDs is that the cathode backlights lose their brightness over time, even within just over a year, to the point where whites don't appear as white, color accuracy is affected, and the screen just isn't as bright anymore. Being a photo editor, I need both a monitor's panel AND backlight to be long lasting and color accurate with age.

So would LED backlit LCDs be the answer? Will LED brightness fade over time?

LEDs present many advantages over traditional light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved robustness, smaller size and faster switching. However, they are relatively expensive and require more precise current and heat management than traditional light sources.

#
# Lifetime: LEDs can have a relatively long useful life. One report estimates 35,000 to 50,000 hours of useful life, though time to complete failure may be longer.[49] Fluorescent tubes typically are rated at about 10,000 to 15,000 hours, depending partly on the conditions of use, and incandescent light bulbs at 1,000?2,000 hours

Taken from Wikipedia's page referring to LEDs. I do believe the technology being used for LED backlighting is the best your going to have for now. From what i've seen inperson from LED backlighting vs traditional is the LED definitely seems to have the sharpest image. Check out a local *bestbuy [*insert random electronic store] for a few LED backlighted displays to see the difference in person.

I wish there was some kind of brightness or light output graph over time that I could see for CCFL vs LED. That 50,000 hours of useful life... what's considered "useful"? To them useful might be anything above 50% of the original brightness, but to me it may only be 80%.

well, its still gonna be a lot longer than non led screens.

And AFAIK useful for a monitor is considerered 50% of original brightness. so good guess on your part
