do LCDs still have crappy COLOR?

I've avoided getting an LCD all this time just because I do a lot of web/graphic design work, and I used to always hear how their color accuracy is always awful compared to a CRT and there's nothing you can do about it. I need pretty good color accuracy so I know how things are going to show up. But I really want to get an LCD for the space saving aspect, and low weight.

Just so you know, right now I use a Samsung 700IFT, which doesn't have have the best color there is (it's more about sharpness than color) but it was $280 when I bought it, and it DOES have very good color.

Anyway, back to the question - do the LCDs of today have color accuracy comparable to a really good CRT made for graphic design? Are there certain brands or models that have the best color?

Yes. I used a nice CRT the other day and was amazed.

LCD is still my display of choice though.

EDIT: wow...15000 posts...

Welcome to my kill file. ;)

edit: back on topic -- I think I read over on Zeldman's site about some of the devices one can use to sync up colors on LCDs similar to the ones for CRTs. Of course, this is for those $$$ LCDs meant for graphic designers. I just brought a 1704FPV and I hope it's all good. I just LOVE LCDs because the eye strain is 1000% less compared to CRT in my opinion (and I have some good CRTs).

edit2: Part of the color problem is the max number of colors a panel/chip on the display can handle. Some of them are 6 bit (I think?) right now. Supposedly, the higher end Dell ones aren't these days? Don't know for sure and I think the 1704FPV is still the lower grade but it's good enough for me.

hm yeah...my CRT doesn't cause that much eyestrain actually. it's really nice. but it takes up so much room and weighs so much already and I want a bigger screen.

I'm no monitor expert, and you may want to ask the guys in the other subforums like video, but I'm pretty sure that if you want the same quality, you need to shell out some briefcases

Are you sure? I didn't notice how much nicer it was on my eyes to use an LCD instead of a CRT until I brought a laptop. Maybe it is because I often wear contacts but I found that my eyes do not dry out as much and do not become as tired as they do when viewing a CRT for extensive periods of time.

I'm not saying you should use a laptop LCD. My arguement is perhaps you don't notice the eye strain. On the other hand, maybe some of us are just more sensitive to it. I love using laptops because I really don't care about color definition that much. As long as it shows flesh tones well enough ;).

we have a photography business in our basement.

one nice CRT, and one 2001FP on our workstations . . . the 2001FP's color was way off, but we calibrated it (monoco optix) and it is fine now. it gave us some problems.

I find the colors to be brighter and crisper on a good CRT, but I still prefer my LCD because of the reduced eye strain.

at my old job, I sat in front of a 17" crt for the entire day... by the time I reached my lunch hour, I had to take an eye break just to rest my eyes. but now at my new job, I'm in front of 17" lcd's all day, and have yet to have any issues with eye strain.
