I just picked up a Sony SDM-HX73 today. Is there anything I need to do to get this thing looking perfect? The screen seems a little brite and the blacks don't seem that black. Is this because this is my first LCD and I'm not use to it?

Its kind of a different animal. If your using Windows XP make sure you use the Clear Text feature for LCD screens. Not sure where it is because I use W2K myself. You'll notice that things may look a bit "grainy" compared to a CRT. Depends on the quality of the LCD.

That LCD you have has a very high brightness rating of 400 (Most LCD's are 250 or 260). Try turning down the brightness. If you are able to turn it down that should help with the black getting darker.

I have the HX53 version of the LCD.. I also can't get the blacks to be black.. turned the contrast all the way up, and the backlight all the way down.. still grayish.. I guess that's how LCDs are. Well I love my 21" CRT :) except I hate how the convergence isn't perfect, one reason I would want LCD.

Well then I would say its the Sony LCD at fault, not all LCD's. I used to use a 19" CRT, then switched to a 15" LCD and love it. It plays game great, and the picture is brighter and sharper than my Nokia CRT ever was. I'll never switch back to a CRT again if I can avoid it. And my blacks are black. The Sony monitor you have has too bright of a LCD rating for a 17" monitor in my opinion.
