Do LCDs actually have liquid in them?

Yes, it's more or less a liquid. It's also more or less a crystal. Hence the term..."liquid crystal". It has some properties of both.

If you smash your monitor, yes the thing can leak. However, it's sealed during manufacturing, so there's no need to worry about leakage. Also, it's not like there's gallons and gallons of LC in there. I'm guessing there's only around a cubic centimeter of LC stuff inside.
