Do laptops burn out???

Hey all...

I'm packing off to B-School and have this amazing deal on the Acer 433 LC Laptop at Singapore...

I like the laptop for the mobility advantage....and the feel

thing is...ppl say i'll generally have the system powered on from dawn to dusk...so they say a desktop is advisable for the always-on situation...

any truth in this? do laptops that are plugged into a power source (A/C Mains) have a burn-out problem? and therfore...which is the better option for this...a laptop or a desktop?

i ran my laptop for 1.5 years about 10 hours a day. then for 1 year i ran it 24/7. These days it runs 8 hours per day. Still going strong.

Its a Toshiba.

I got a Dell Inspiron 7000 in Fall 99 for school and it's been on pretty much 24/7 since then. It won't die.

Of course they're build to be used. You actually think a company could make a product like this and then stick a warning on it... "Caution, do not use this for more than 4 hours per day to avoid risk of burning it up" ??? lol

LCD's will fade out...within 5years its usable still but noticible....after 10years who knows

For alot of stuff a palm/PDA may be a better portable solution.

Now with these TV screens (most people still have their tv after 10 years and are much more critical of picture quality) I am sure people will be pissed their $10k+ purchase is all floppy in the wind in a few years.

I like my 32" Toshiba and in most rooms is big enough (2.5x picture height = viewing distance), although I would like a 16x9 screen in the same size
