Do it yourself Oil Change Question..

RU482

Lifer
I bought a small grease gun that takes 3oz tubes (~6 inches long)

The gun came with a tube of Pennzoil MultiPurpose 302 EP Grease with Moly (NLGI #2 Lithium based grease containing moly disulfide). I noticed on the label, quote "Automotive applications include steering, chassis, suspension parts, ball joints and wheel bearings of vehicles equipped with conventional brakes (not disc brakes). Use Pennzoil Premium wheel bearing 707L Red Grease to lubricate wheel bearigs in vehicles equipped with disc brakes or ABS."

Anyway, on to my questions.

1) Do you have to lube the grease points at every oil change?
2) Anyone know where I can get small tubes of red grease? My local stores don't carry it.
3) What is the meaning of life??

Thanks

1) No. Usually its 15 or 30,000 miles, check your owners manual
2) What local store? Most parts stores should have something, or can order it. I prefer Napa myself.
3) 42

I checked Oreilly's, Jockos, Arnold Motor supply, K-mart and Walmart, no luck
They had the larger tubes.

Service manual for the van calls for the grease points to be lubed at every oil change

Those mini grease guns are cute, but that was my concern too - not having a wide variety of greases readily available for them.

So I just got a normal sized one.

I have seen the small tubes at Autozone so try there.

But I have a good full size gun so I can choose different grease.

I never grease joints everytime, unless it is a 4X4 that goes off road quite a bit. Putting to much in and adding while very cold can actually do damage. A good all round grease is the valvoline semi-syn.

I've have one of those minis for years. Used to get the tubes 3 for a dollar. I don't think you're going to find the red grease in them, I never did. Hand packed the last one. Big pain. Just buy a big one with a flex end (extra $). Napa sells the red grease (Lucas). That's a good shop, if you can find one that hasn't gone corporate.

Just something to check before you go at it, a lot of newer cars dont have working grease fittings on them, they simply have a plug or nubb in its place. They are generaly suposed to be sealed for the life of the part. Though i have seen kits to retrofit them to have grease fittings.

If they have the plug, then you can install a fitting. The "sealed for life" type ball joints don't have a plug.
