Ive had cable thru optimum online for four years or so...

do they keep records of every website you visit even back so many years? That must take up so much room if they do

nope, the closest is prolly storing cached data on their proxy's. which will eventually be flushed anyway.

I doubt it. That's hundreds of terabytes worth of data.

Perhaps you fail to comprehend just how ridiculously well text logs compress. ISPs could easily have traffic logs from the beginning of the Intarweb.

I know that my university stores everything that goes through its internet connection. But only a select few people have access to that information and can only be released under some court order. I think they keep upto 3 years of data.

either you have pretty weak bandwidth, or your university has dedicated 1000's of terabytes to logging packets. That, or they don't. More likely is a short term log of where and when, rather than actual information.

for some reason you folk think we capture packets, umm NO!, we keep logs of what IP you go to and what port you used...and what directories your went to and the file names of what you retrived. this data does not take up all that much room, even years worth of it, when compressed will fit in a fairly small amount of space, under a TB.
