i think it depends on the provider... usually our is "supposed" to change every 24 hours, but it usually renews to the same ip for a course of weeks... but it just depends i guess.

Most of the ones I have seen that run DHCP are all over the place. I know some people that have had the same IP for over 9 months. And others that get theirs changed every few weeks.

Wouldn't that depend if your ISP offers dynamic (changes every time you connect/reboot modem) or static IP's(doesn't change)??

As others have said it varies. Mine tend not to renew for very long periods, however.

Damn Earthlink PPPoE servers!

my experience with DSL (SBC) was that they intentionally change the IP, sometimes a few times a week , sometimes serveral times a day, it was very annoying

my experience with cable (TW-RR) , my IP changes maybe every few months, normally only when something on their side goes out, like i will lose connection for a few minutes, and then when it starts working again, i might have a new IP

Is there an advantage of having permanent IPs? I was thinking of maybe if you run a server on your computer it might be useful.. otherwise?

It can also be bad. If some spammer or DoS attacker gets your IP, they can start hammering your IP. This has happened to me before. Someone decided they wanted to hit my IP repeatedly for days. I ended up releasing my IP and then re-connecting later. But, that was over a year ago and nothing like that has happened since. I don't think my IP has changed since I moved about 4 months ago.

depends on you and your ISP's DHCP server.

leave your modem/PC on for a long time = same IP (unless ISP interferes)

Servers can be very useful. That's certainly advantage numero uno.

That's what I thought. I got some probes that were blocked by ZoneAlarm. But after renewing my IP, the same probes occured.

Guess it could be someone trying to hit your entire network node. Sorry to hear that. Maybe release, disconnect your modem for an hour or two, pull power from the modem (to reset it), and then start all over again.
