I've been hearing mixed opinions about SWTOR, the biggest being it's just another WoW clone. I played WoW for 3 years, quit back in 2007 with no intentions of going back. One thing I heard about SWTOR that did get my attention is that you aren't forced to play with other people to progress in the game, you can solo your way through. Is this true? Are there other reasons to play it/ not play? Really wish there was a free trial....

There is an existing thread for this game where you can ask all the questions you desire.

A buddy of mine got in on the beta and loved it. He said it was very different from WoW. I'm thinking of giving it a try myself, but don't have the time right now to get it.

Nah, don't bother with it. There are better games coming out, GW2, Tera Online

this
SWTOR is basically a more complicated WoW with far more love for carebearing it and less love for loot farming and pvp

Nope. If you've avoided getting sucked in by the hype until now, you might as well give it a pass.

I had some (not high, but some) hopes for this game early on, but as I read more about it and finally played if for myself during a few of the beta events I decided it really wasn't for me.

The big features are that it's Star Wars and the voices, otherwise it's mostly more of the same. I'm a SW fan, but the voices are a mixed bag (good on the class storyline, not so good on kill 10 x sidequests). Sure, you can spacebar through all the conversations, but an option for text would be much less tedious on minor quests. Even with the SW aspect it just didn't grab me as an MMO I'd want to put a lot of time or money into.

You should be able to solo through the game just like almost every other MMO out there. It depends what you're looking for.

I mostly feel annoyed that they would hijack the name of a decent game series in order to launch an MMO. Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 were brilliant games (ie. my top 10 all-time favourites). Unless the MMO completely fails, I guess that's the last of KOTOR.

Describing it as a WoW clone is completely meaningless, as is trotting out words like 'care bear'. So far the questing is good and I am having fun with it.

does it share things with all mmo's?
yes

is it a clone of wow?
no. people that say that need a new perspective and adjective.

"4 tires and a steering wheel? this ford is just like my chevy! except my chevy comes with chuck norris commercials, pandas, degenerate kids, and a clusterfuck of shitty graphics!"

99% of swtor is meant to be solo'd along 16 different stories. it's 1/2 way between oblivion and an mmo, targeted at lightweight and single-player gamers. to facilitate this it's very clean and simple (too simple for many ppl's liking) and for the most part, easy. a lot of grinding is automated and it's easy to dodge mobs you don't want to fight, but you can play it that way if you want. as it's very quest and story based, they level you very quickly so you can roll another and get into its story.

my opinion is that with some maturity, this game can be great. right now, the ui needs help and what little high-end multiplayer stuff there is is bugged as hell. i'd like to see more hardcore options for the ui and more multiplayer. i'm told the pvp is currently not very good - surprise, surprise. there will be a damage meter "soon".

edit:
you could read the swtor thread that's stickied to the top of the pc gaming page to see what actual players think of it

I am liking the game a lot. It's still rough around the edges but still really fun for me. I've been playing since early access started on Dec. 13th and have been playing pretty much every day since and I'm just level 44 since I am taking my time and enjoying it. No power level for me. I play as a Commando Combat Medic and I like the play style.

Is it perfect? No...and is not even close to how refined and polished WoW has become over the years, but it's the first MMO besides WoW to hold my attention. I've tried every major MMO release in the past 5 or 6 years and none of them have held my interest for more than 1 or 2 weeks. I always went back to WoW.

how does someone hijack something they own?

if those games, including swg, were making any money they'd still be around.

Only you can answer that, end of the day there are players on both sides of the fence ie hated and liked it,personally I thought it was ok (story was main thing holding the game for me but that can only take you so far) however it got too hard in the 30s for soloing some normal mobs(I could not even beat 3 sith NPCs(not elites) that were level 37 even at my 40 level with companion with over 100k spent on very good gear,so it had serious balancing issues with some mobs and became frustrating as hell for me,so much so I quit, there was some lag issues too ie lag in combat that could mean death even with good pings I had like 25-49ms pings on average.

Any new game like TOR will have issues but the game should never be frustrating to play where you have to give up in the later stages.

Space combat was crap IMHO,too linear and scripted, like being on auto pilot, also the game became a money sink hole, think it was like 220k for level 40 speeder, glad I quit, end of the day plenty of MMORPGs out there so you are bound to find one you like maybe even TOR.

The most important thing about any MMORPG is that you enjoy it,if you have that then you are in the right game.

I found the game odd, because it felt like they stuffed what could have been a rather good single player game into a MMO. They have mechanics in the game that seem like they matter such as light side vs. dark side for Jedi, which ultimately mean very little when it comes to end game, which is the real mainstay for a MMO.

Haha is there really a phone called Transformer Prime? :awe:

No and Yes. No, it's not a phone; it's a tablet.

I also find it amusing that the Tapatalk signature (which are not allowed by the way) was longer than the actual message.

Well, you are technically correct that you cannot hijack what you already own, but you are quibbling on semantics. I think what mikey means is that they (Lucas Arts, Bioware, EA, or all of them, or whoever) abandoned an excellent single player franchise to turn it into an MMO. I know personally I would have very much preferred a third single player game to tie up the storyline, especially after the somewhat rushed ending of KOTOR 2.

Personally, I am happy for those that like TOR, but I refuse to get sucked into any MMO, no matter how good they claim the solo experience is. I dont think it can ever be the same as a single player game. And obviously, it can never tie up the KOTOR storyline because it is set in a totally different period.

I agree with you, except I would rate KOTOR 1 better than the second game which to me had a muddled storyline and very weak ending. KOTOR 1 however, is probably my favorite game ever.

But yes, they abandoned the single player franchise to forcus on the MMO.
