Do I still need to avoid carpet if...

To put together a new system...

I can go on lino if need be, but the most convenient place for me to build will be on carpet.

I know to void it but do I stll need to worry about it even with a wrist strat grouding me?

Thanks!

WOOWOOWOWOWO NEW SYSTEM IS HERE!!

If you really really want to, just dont move your feet around. Keep them posted still.

But, why chance it? Take it to a table, its better that way anyways incase you drop a screw or something anyways.

I work on carpet all the time no problems I just make sure I touch the inside of the case metal before I grab any componets.

Yep, I work on carpet all the time with no problems. Though I always wear the anti-static wrist strap. Haven't fried anything yet.

I always work on carpets, and do not wear an anti static wrist wrap. I may be lucky, but then again you can never be too careful.

I always work on carpet and never wear a anti static wrist strap. I've never zapped anything. Just be sure to ground yourself before working with components.

I always wear a Wrist Strap when handling components.
I do my work at a table cuz its easier .. more space, no risk, no worries.
And I also touch the metal on the case as well before hand.

That might sound like overkill, but I had static safety drummed into me since Im being doing this stuff.
By the way I've never "Destroyed" anything so far either.

I work on pc's all the time on the carpet without a wrist strap, usually take my shoes off, touch the inside of the case and continue on. Haven't fried anything yet. Knock on wood! I really don't want to be grounded to the case, in case of an electrical problem, I would be the least amount of resistance. OUCH!

No, you wouldn't be; the ground wire in your electrical socket (to which your system, presumably, is also grounded) would be the path of least resistance. Of course, if you've got your system plugged into one of those 2- to 3-prong converters (which you really shouldn't do), then you might have an issue.

I've read that if working on carpet, you should use one of those spray-mist bottles (like they sell at shops for plants/flowers and things), and .. I forget what you are supposed to use (fabric softener? does that come in liquid form rather than sheets?), but it basically results in an anti-static spray mist. Spray the carpet area that you are going to be working on, before you put down the parts.

Me, I invested $10 in an anti-static mat to put down (or on a table top), before I work on systems. They are kind of like floormats, but specially coated, and mine has a metal snap to attach a grounding wrist-strap directly to it.

ive built every one of my systems on carpet and not the slightest thing happend to them. What you have to do is touch the case with one of your feet, keep it there while you put stuff in and youl be good to go.

Its not really a big deal, just dont run around and then touch a component, walk wherever, ground yourself and don't move your feet and continue work. It would be better to just move it somewhere else though if possible. My x800xt PE has been through alot though. Thought it was broke a week or so ago, so I walked with it on a carpet, I pulled on my watercooling cable by accident and a few drips came out and landed on the card, while the computer was ON, haha but it was fine, so im guessing they can resist quiet a bit.

Unless their were a problem with the ground at the breaker panel or outside ground.

omgwtffriedcomponents!?!?!?

you guys work on carpets?

I do all work in a clean room, in clean suits. The environment is completely sterile... I take no risks...

Normally the result of electrostatic discharge doesn't fry components right away. Instead it weakens them causing them to possibly not survive as long as they should of. So you really don't know what harm you've done right away.
